The Challenge: The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) considers any populated area with under 50,000 people as rural. My home county, during the 2010 Census, was listed as having 20,947 residents in the entire 778 square miles. The median income is listed at $28K for males and $18K for females. 31% of the population UNDER the age of 18, and OVER the age of 65, live in poverty. When you are struggling to simply survive, the arts is often seen as an indulgence for the wealthy of which there are few in this area. The rich artistic training that I experienced growing up here, in spite of growing up as part of the county's working poor, is no longer available.

My Response: OPERAtunities in Creativity is an arts hub that will offer classes and workshops in the arts. By taking advantage of nearly 20 years of arts and classroom integration, the hub differs from other arts classes. Classes that I offer are designed to not only provide training in the art form, but they are designed to reinforce and reengage students with learning in their classroom. I am only one person. There is only so many hours in a day. There is only so much that I can do alone, but I am committed to do all that I can.

About Me: I began piano lessons when I was six years old. At nine, I started lessons in ballet, tap, and jazz. By eleven, I was taking voice lessons and playing the saxophone. In high school, I added drama to that list. All I have ever done has been connected to the arts, and that training came out of this little rural county in lower Alabama.
My degrees in voice are from Oberlin Conservatory and Louisiana State University. I thought I'd finally leave my life in the arts with my doctoral process, but the University of Alabama allowed me to design an interdisciplinary degree in aesthetic meaning-making, performance, and arts-based research. For over twenty years, I've worked as a national arts education consultant using the arts to connect with the poor, the isolated, and the incarcerated youth of our communities.
After completing my doctorate, I returned home to take care of my mother. It was a rude awakening to find that the community that nurtured the arts in me no longer had many of those programs for its youth. There is a void, and I am taking it upon myself to fill it the best way that I can. I need your help.
