I have lived in China for over 8 years; it is my second home and despite our occasional difficulties, I still love her, and I want to share the beauty of the culture and people in all its facets.

As a medievalist, I have always loved epic poetry, and in 2015 I developed the idea of writing The Canton Tales, an epic poem that will take place on a train trip from Beijing to Hong Kong with the speaker being a laowai like myself, and with various stories about China being told to me. I will be creating Chinese characters based on the very characters in The Canterbury Tales, and each character will tell two stories detailing aspects from Chinese myths, ancient and contemporary urban legends, news and social media events.

My goal is to create not only a holistic view of China as a nation and the people as a culture, but to mix English and Chinese Putonghua pinyin as a way to teach people the language.

This is a huge project and will need a lot of support, both financial and in terms of contributions of stories - I have many stories I know of already, but I am open to more stories from people as well, which is another way for people to contribute.

I am even hoping, once I have completed this, to make it a TV series as well, depending on reception of the book to the general population.

Goals
$0 of $5,000 per month
Once I reach $5000, I intend to look for an artist to illustrate the characters, meshing classical Chinese art styles and medieval styles from Chaucer's original text together to create cover, section, and character art for the book.

The goal is to find a local Chinese artist and give them an opportunity to build up their reputation and portfolio and showcase their talent. I want to pay things forward as much as possible.
