In this video above, filmed in 2014, I'm discussing my first book. When I became ill with depression, I turned to writing and art to grapple with my symptoms. Inspired by Edvard Munch’s philosophy that we should all write or paint our life story, I am now a thriving artist. Through the mediums of gouache, oils, and etching, I consider myself primarily a colorist and expressionist— energy and emotions are key to my work.

I was born and raised in Sweden, I moved with my wife to the United States in the early 1990s and settled in Salt Lake City. I attended the University of Utah and graduated in 1999 with a BA in speech communication.

Soon after, I returned to Scandinavia with my young family and ultimately secured a position in IT sales. The demands of my new job, on the heels of many years of stress, took a toll on my health, and I fell into a severe depression. It was during this difficult time that I began to draw and paint, inspired by Edvard Munch’s philosophy that we should all write or paint our life story.

In 2002, I had my first exhibit in my new hometown of Moss, Norway. Over the years since, I have pursued a career in art, participating in many group exhibits and annual solo gallery shows. I was also awarded several public art commissions in Hvaler, Norway, and Skagen, Denmark. In 2007 I completed a series of Auschwitz-Birkenau paintings in honor of my grandmother, who was a survivor. One of the pieces was acquired by the Mizel Museum in Denver, Colorado.

More recently, I have embarked on several study trips to New York City, Prague, and Amsterdam. In October 2014, I was accepted to work at the prestigious printmaking studio Estudi de Gravat Ignasi Aguirre Ruiz in Barcelona under master printer Ignacio, who has worked with a number of renowned artists, including Dali, Tapies, and Miro. For his etchings, I primarily use aquatint, drypoint, or carborundum.

When painting, I use either oil on canvas or gouache on paper. I love the difference between these techniques. Working with oils is like taking a long mountain expedition while working with gouache is like climbing without a rope. One mistake and you’re dead!

Influences include Scandinavian artists Munch, Karsten, and Sparre, continental masters Gauguin, Van Gogh, Bonnard, and Matisse, and the German Der Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) movement (1911–1914) spearheaded by Kandinsky.

In 2010, I earned international acclaim by founding Twitter Art Exhibit, a social media initiative whereby artists from around the world send hand-painted postcards that are exhibited for local charities in need of funding. This annual event has gone global, taking place in such cities as Los Angeles, Orlando, and New York City. The 2017 exhibit in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, attracted more than 1,000 artists from 65 countries.

An author as well an artist, I wrote a memoir about my challenges with mental illness: I’ll Run Till the Sun Goes Down: A Memoir about Depression and Discovering Art. Published by Sandra Jonas Publishing in Boulder, Colorado, the book was released in September 2015.

I live with my wife and two sons in Moss, Norway.

Matisse said, "Creativity takes courage." To make the leap into becoming a full-time artist is complex. The drive towards art is nearly intoxicating while remaining true to your passion over time, a test of endurance. Artists have always been faced with the challenge of sustaining life while creating good art. Most masters have needed financial and emotional support along the way. Vincent, for example, had his dear brother Theo. It is emotional to consider the difference that Theo made by his kindness.

Patreon is a wonderful program to sustain creatives with a small monthly amount of choice, so they can focus on their work. In return, you will become part of my "insiders club," getting posts and insights that I will share on no other platform. You will also be able to divide payments over time to acquire work and get special perks along the way.

I appreciate all of your support and I promise to keep working. I am an artist.

Your patronage will help me to fully commit myself to each of my projects by covering the amount of my time spent to continually stay engaged in the fields of philanthropy, writing, and painting.

When I reach my first goal of $200/month, one lucky random patron will get a free etching sent to them!
