My name is Tom Whittaker. I am an abstract artist based in Miami, Florida creating vividly colored and intensely detailed three dimensional paintings along with ink pieces, traditional paintings, and sculpture. My goal in each piece that I create is to engage the viewer and create a moment where they can reflect on what they are seeing in front of them, and the world around them.

I am currently working on three main series: PORTALS, a series inspired by the beauty of negative space; WATER, a seven piece series inspired by the movement of air and water all around us, expressed in both ink pointillism and fluid painting techniques; and DREAMSCAPES, a series inspired by the nature of dreams and how they flow and change but are still completely accepted by the subconscious mind.  My ultimate goal is to combine these series (and others that are in their infancy) and unite them as a large scale gallery show with a corresponding audio album titled "VII",  presenting them as a connected, cohesive vision.

Among my inspirations are dreams, nature and the elements, and theological myths and legends from ancient cultures.  As an artist, I am well aware of the world we now live in, and i try to incorporate how we gather information and learn into most of my work. Often a piece will have an obscure title, not to confuse the viewer, but to encourage them to look it up and read about my inspiration for that particular piece Whether it be the scientific name for an underwater creature, an ancient theological myth, or just a song or album i was obsessing over while i was painting that particular piece, I want people to carry my inspirations with them far after they are done looking at my work.

Before becoming a full time visual artist I was an audio engineer for many studios in Chicago (including being lead engineer at the legendary Invisible Records), and eventually owned my own studio and recorded with some of the best underground rock bands in the city before moving to Miami to rededicate myself to visual art. Working in the music industry has taught me to think about things in a non-linear way. You have to think of the big picture even when working on the smallest sound, and I feel this type of holistic thinking has led me to greater and greater successes in my visual art.
