In reference to people today, I believe most often when we see an individual or a groups outward expression of (extremism, racism, violence, rebellion, anger, hedonism, patriotism, fascism, vanity, spiritualists, self-righteousness), showing itself in countless forms (piercings, tattoos, big trucks, low riders, conservative/liberal, gun nuts, environmentalists, sports fanatics, flag burners, gangsters, hippies, hipsters, punks, anarchist, bikers, rednecks, intellectuals, addicts, vegans, politicians, and so forth),
that outward expression is a shield put up to tell people, hey I'm an individual, but I associate with this group or mindset because I fear others that are not like me.
In my experience, most often beneath that shell is a person who wants equality and wellbeing for those that are associated with them, whether it be immediate family, or a total stranger. In the end, a strong majority of people want what's best for society.
Go ahead, have a honest and heartfelt conversation with a stranger, and most importantly the people you interact with everyday. You will find that people want peaceful coexistence and to feel connected, by being heard and listened to. People want safety.
And On occasion there are people that are just downright mean spirited and cruel. That manifestation is most often seeded in traumatic past experiences. Sometimes when the burdens of economic hardships and classes of society appear unjust, it can cause deep ceded resentment . Over time the absence of connecting physically and/or emotionally with another individual can rear itself when a person or group shows a lack of empathy toward other people or groups of association.
Because that emotional connection is foreign to that individual or group, cruel and mean behavior is the outward expression often.
