Hi there.

My name is Colin Maddox, I create digital art, illustrations, and games. As a visual designer, I’ve done work for some big companies and brands. Now I’ve created this Patreon page as a place to work on self-directed projects. Instead of designing brand elements or solving visual problems for clients I’m going to be making the kind of stuff I want to.

I love designing logos, interfaces, print materials, and helping clients communicate visually, but here on my Patreon page you're going to see animated GIFs, digital wallpapers, time-lapse process videos, sketches, poster prints, stickers, illustrated card games, paper & dice roleplaying games, and any other project that captures my attention.

Robots have always fascinated me. My art is riddled with ninjas (if you can see them). I’ve been known to throw down and bust electric boogaloo, battling fools. I dig optical illusions, sacred geometry, ambigrams, and logic puzzles. You’ll find all of these

As long as I can remember I’ve been drawing and designing. When I was a kid, I would make copies of  my illustrations to sell at school to buy better art supplies. Well, this is kind of similar. I’m going to post the things I create and if you like what you see, you can kick some cash my way through Patreon, which would make you an extremely awesome person.

I’m lucky to be married to Shayla Maddox (who is currently featured on the Patreon home page.  If you haven’t seen her page, check it out). We love traveling to new places, trying foods, experiencing culture, and art. I use photography from those travels as the basis for much of my digital art. She and I train in Krav Maga: an intense military combatives system used by law enforcement, government, and military agents around the world.

What is Patreon?

Patreon is a service where creators like myself can post their work and people like you can support that work. It’s an ongoing crowdfunding service that connects Patrons with Creators. You can choose any amount you want to give and change your mind at any time. But it goes beyond just a transaction system, it’s an amazing way to build a community of people who appreciate and support art and the artists who make it. This level of connection creates wonderful opportunities for collaboration and makes it so much easier to find people making amazing things you love.

With Patreon you can contribute directly to the creation of art, culture, science, and games. Now the funds go past the middlemen and straight to the people making the work you like. No more do we need to physically mass-produce products or make annoying ads to try to scrape a living out of the margin.

More importantly, Patreon is good people!

I’ve had the good fortune to visit the Patreon HQ in San Francisco several times and can honestly say the people who work there are some of the brightest, most passionate, dedicated people I’ve ever met. (Not to mention witty, attractive, and obnoxiously good at drinking games.)

Patreon has completely changed our lives while changing the way people get paid for creating. Patreon represents a major shift in the economics of being a creator trying to make great work in a world built for an outdated model.

What Sort of Stuff Are You Doing Through Patreon?

Patreon is where I can focus on work that’s not client-driven. I get to make the kind of art I like that's not designed for advertising or business. As this grows I will spend more of my time focusing on this audience and making the stuff you want to see. I’ll be able to travel and use the photography and videos as fuel for my digital art.

The freedom and flexibility I gain through Patreon will allow me to work on projects I’ve had in mind that wouldn’t otherwise be able to support me. Like a series of games and books featuring my designs and art. I also plan on developing an interactive game played directly through Patreon itself.

I want to connect directly with the people supporting me. If you contribute to my Patreon account, you and I will be exchanging comments and you’ll have access to my work in ways that weren’t possible before. I plan on incorporating your interaction into the work itself, whether that’s doing custom pieces, getting feedback, collaborating, or playing new game systems as they develop.

Finally I want to connect with other creators and people making awesome work. Patreon is an amazing platform that breaks down long-standing financial barriers for artists, but it’s also a place where people can find and communicate with others on the same wavelength.

…And it’s just getting started.

Why Should I Support You?

If you like what I do and you want to see more of it your support goes a long way and means more to me than you realize.

Your support means I get to make art directly for people like you rather than brands, and businesses. For me it’s much more fulfilling to make art that people love than to make more advertising. I would much rather create cool stuff that means something to the people who see it.

Patrons will also get the opportunity to contribute to these projects. You will have the chance to add text or imagery to some of the projects in interesting ways. Depending on the level of contributor, I might do custom art or illustration for you, or you could have the chance to provide source material to be chopped, mashed and glitched.

My Patrons get special access to prints and other exclusive materials. As a supporter who enables me to create some of these more complex projects, like games or books, you will get mentioned in the credits.

  • I will make Glitch-GIF from any photo you supply.
    • The photo must be yours
    • The photo must be something that you would willingly show to a convention of kindly grandmothers.
  • You will also get still images of interesting frames within the GIF
Goals
$97 of $500 per month
My weapon of choice is a laptop and a selection of software. The deeper arsenal contains cameras, mobile devices, backup & storage systems, microphones, and whatever else is necessary to get the job done.

Keeping all of this fresh and on-point adds up. My computer is the source of everything I have and do, it's my pixel farm, my digital lathe, my silicon sine qua non.

Reaching this goal means that I never have to let my equipment hold me back. It means the work can get bigger and better as I try to push the next system to it's limit. The more the gear can handle, the more interesting the work can be.
