A personal matter

My name is Marianna, and I am a cultural anthropologist.
Writing and talking about Japan is not only a travel journal or the record of an adventure. It is an intimate action, a gesture of baring my soul and most private self.

It is the result, and evaluation, of eight years of travel, work, research, love and struggle. It is me. It me in the most sensitive and emotional spot.

My love for Japan started, as for many of my generation, when I first discovered anime and manga. Those compelling adventures became the doorway to a reach, amazing world I could only love. In the meantime, I enrolled at my city university looking for a degree that could help me deepen my knowledge of that wonderland. I got a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and a Master degree in Science of Religion.

Meantime, in 2008 I visited Japan for the first time. This was the moment in which I felt that everything I studied about Japan was only the surface of the magic it held for me. It was a trauma, a deep feeling of belonging, and at the same time an underlying sense of nostalgia. The emotion you experience when you arrive back home after a long journey. Illogical, right?

Yet, all those feeling stayed with me, and encouraged me to pursue an amazing (and confusing) path; that of PhD in Paris (in Anthropology and Religions, and Far Eastern Studies), to deepen further my comprehension of Japan and its wonders. Anthropology entered in my story, and offered my new lenses to discover Japan, where I returned in 2012 - until 2014.

Now, I feel that all the experiences I had, all the memories I treasure, and all the knowledge I acquired in these years need to be shared, to reach other people who may be looking for similar emotions, who may need to experience encounters with new eyes.

So, to get practical, what are the goals for this Patreon?
  • Well, of course... some financial aid to keep writing, recording, editing and sharing. I am a researcher, and I support myself thanks to various financed projects, but this would give me more freedom to pursuit my dream-project
  • More various content: in my previous life I was an illustrator, and I would love to add this skill to my blog, and to my memories of Japan
  • The chance to write a complete travel book about Japan, with my experience and my best tips to get in touch with the true soul (if we can say this...) of this country
  • Constant interaction and transparency
  • Maybe, in the future, some special gadgets
