The images I make often mirror the experiences of alternative music events. There is a moment suspended in time, separate from reality where a whole new landscape unfolds into itself. Groups of people, maybe who didn’t come together but share an experience in the same vein, join together and fill a room as a single body. Once, the first chords have rung out the floor expands into a mass dancing, moving, and flying around. The interactions of these moments all build into a mosh pit. Bodies collide into each other and then separate. The barriers of the stage begin to fall and the crowd begins flying around the amplifiers and into the sky. The singer of the group aids people on to the stage so they can float. The people flip onto the heads of others while some scream the lyrics along to feel apart of the sound in this temporary space. The neon bulbs illuminate everything around as the crowd of people move away from reality for a chance to bring this back with them tomorrow.

In other ways the world collapses in on itself. Staring at the ceiling fan and and drowning in the melancholy of the oscillation. Putting on Side A of an LP and laying on the floor, swirling alone, in leaving what was last weekend behind and back into the everyday. Finding glimpleses of the weekend on the stereo and a reminder of that saturated landscape.

My work is not an illustration of a mosh pit but this metaphor acts as a way to begin to digest the art I create. I often depict everyday scenes filled to brim with stuff, people, color and patterns. In my art, people don’t always interact but still exist within the snapshot. They are moving with their own agendas much like the person who is trying to get on stage versus the person moving away from them to get to the dance floor. In the world around me I see people moving in this way. People often are trying to ‘live their best life’ and move along as they are floating away and putting a barrier between themselves and those around them. I am searching for the an interaction like someone putting their hands down so another can slingshot them into the crowd and make them feel apart of the space.
I am questioning these relations to one another, I am curious as to why people can’t interact and are isolated. Through this journey and through repetitive motifs like the boy with the baseball hat as a stand in for myself or the sail boat, I am floating through this saturated landscape and diving into the chaos of the light to search for some sort of belonging.
