Understanding the story of Lawministry and (aka) Law

In the year 2002, I met my father for the first time, he had been in prison most of my life. Up until that point I had been on a path of destruction with little to no regard for anything or anyone. Someone had gone to the prison where my father was, and preached the Gospel.
My father heard the Gospel, repented of his sins and got baptized in a prison bath, this day would go down in history as the day that changed my life, a day where one man’s obedience would lead to the many being made righteous (Rom 5:19), although this statement, at its core is referring to Christ being the first obedient man, this led to my father’s obedience which in turn led to mine. In the year 2003 I had the privilege of going to do a year of my life at a ministry School called Pneumatix where I learned something of the impact of Christian ministry, especially on the practical side of touring the country and presenting the gospel message in the form of music, dance and drama.

It was at Pneumatix in a horse stable where God revealed to me that I had a gift in song writing and rapping, but it would take a journey of being teachable to perfect it, and a knee bowing humility to witness it being used in the right way. Law was the name I took on as an aka, for a rap artist. The name came to me as I had it in my heart to be a standing message of the law of love that Paul spoke about in (Rom 13:8 - Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law). In asking people to love each other they would realize that they are unable to do so apart from the very source of love, namely Christ himself. With this understanding, the Law was our tutor which, by showing us our sins, was escorting us to Christ. The name Law also stood well with leading Gods people in such a way that they would understand the meaning of having His laws written on their hearts considering the new covenant (Jer 31:33-34), and that we are not saved by good work but rather unto good works (Eph 2:10) and in this way, the message of Law, is that we, in Christ Jesus, continue to uphold the law of love by the power of the Holy Spirit (a call to love each other as Christ loved us).

Lawministry came about in the following year 2004 as an extension of the original ministry, as to have a wider influence, not limited to one set of gifts, as I knew in my heart God had also gifted me with the gift of leadership, teaching and preaching which could not come to fruition if I were to stay and build solely as a recording artist, being under the banner “Lawministry” it allows me to build with the same heart in mind towards the goal of planting and leading a church. The kind of church that God had placed on my heart is a church known for holding to the truth of God’s word, being led by the spirit through the most important thing in the life of a local church, which is expository preaching, with regards to the whole counsel of God, and letting that dictate what the culture and community looks like within the church. This is how people came to know me as Law and how the idea of Lawministry came about.

Vision of Law and Lawministry in terms of (what)

  • 1.To create quality theocentric Hip Hop/rap music of an excellent nature and make it available to all people.

  • 2.Preaching the Gospel and Teaching the whole counsel of God

Vision of Law and Lawministry in terms of (Why)

[1. To create quality theocentric Hip Hop/rap music of an excellent nature and make it available to all people]
  • Music is a very powerful medium in which to convey a message that needs to be heard, and music is also a very powerful pastime in which one can be built up by or broken down depending on the message. The message of the gospel needs to be heard. Sound theology is needed, to deal with reality, therefore my music will be confined to a theocentric nature and the medium will not be placed above the message, whenever a medium becomes more important than the message it’s trying to convey, it loses its power.
  • Obedience to the scriptures, (Eph 5:19) while Paul is talking to the church of Ephesus and telling them to walk in love, he admonishes them to address one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with their hearts, considering this, and that my gift should be well stewarded, my music at its heart seeks to edify the body of believer and set a sanctified witnessing example for all those who would be drawn by the message it speaks.
  • The music, in its entirety, is an influential platform that will gather a following, and at the right time, Lord willing, will make the transition into leading a church more graceful.

[2. Preaching the Gospel and Teaching the whole counsel of God]
  • This has been a weighty and noble desire of mine, and stands strong in my conscious, and while I am currently active in this with regards to most instances, and having been on a lot of platforms up until now I still look forward with regards to leading a church, this is to be worked out at a time that God so chooses in His wisdom.
  • Obedience to the scriptures considering my gifts (Eph 4:11-13) to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.
  • Lastly is my conviction that, one cannot become a Christ follower and not love the things God loves and hate the things God hates, considering this, Christ loves the church and those who truly follow Him should have a natural leaning towards that end. This is the reason why, I have a heart for the body of believers.

Vision of Law and Lawministry in terms of (how)

In the understanding of setting realistic goals, in terms of achieving the vision I see with regards to Law and Lawministry, I must say that one of them must take preference to help the growth of the other, although they are being done at the same time, the music (Law) side of things does fall under the big picture (Lawministry) which, has leading a church, as the big picture goal. While the big picture is being patiently worked out as I continue in the faith, I must be taking forward steps in doing what I can with regards to being a witness and an influence within the music side, as a realistic forward moving goal at this time. The following is a breakdown of some practical steps I had planned to take to continue with this vision and understanding of what is needed.

[1. To create quality theocentric Hip Hop/rap music of an excellent nature and make it available to all people]
  • First and most important is the writing and composing music that is submitted to the general idea that a particular album message is conveying to the listeners, this is the producing stage, in the past I’ve had the privilege of having a producer whom I worked closely with when I was signed to STF records, by now I have gained the skill and understanding to do this process of producing on my own as not to be dependent on a record label, this autonomy will allow for a more refined product that I feel represents what I am trying to achieve with excellence well. This producing stage will need tools such as a general studio room and general studio equipment, all of which I will source and grow as I go along, as the Lord sees fit to release Lawministry into its intended purpose.
  • The next stage is mixing and mastering, and although I have the skill and experience to mix and master music, it is never a wise decision to mix and master the music if you are the producer of that music, this is the “fresh ear” rule. To have an Industry standard, quality mixed and mastered album it takes a generous amount of funding, but this stage is very important in the process of making music, and having been in the music industry for a while, I have gained relationships with key people in the industry who are reasonably priced, which takes me on to my next point on funding.
  • Now the big question is, how is this ministry going to be funded? Well in the past all we had as musicians was a day job and CD sales which didn’t go very well because of the illegal copying of music and big middleman cuts from business men, it is always a financial strain to keep the music ministry going under these conditions. Now also with apple music changing the industry with streaming music, it’s even harder to keep the vision alive financially. A friend of mine from the States introduced me to Patreon which is the sliced bread concept for ministries like mine. What it is? Patreon is the best way for creators to earn ongoing revenue directly from their fans. This means that I will have a profile on Patreon whereby I connect with the very people who benefit from Lawministry, some of them will be fans of my music and other’s will be supporting the ministry in the heart of getting the Gospel message out there, but these two groups of people are really one group called Patreon’s that believe in this vision. I have named them “The Few” (below is a full detailed description of the concept of “The Few”). These people can become a Patreon for as little as one hundred rand a month that works out to an average of three rand twenty a day, obviously, this is the minimum amount, they can give more if they so choose to do so, that is entirely up to them. For their support, they get the following rewards from Lawministry
  • -Early and free releases of all my music
  • -Regular mini teaching podcasts
  • -Fam Fan chats (live)
  • -Free entry to all the event where I minister or perform
  • -Upon sign up there is a complete album of all the best works of Law

[2. Preaching the Gospel and Teaching the whole counsel of God]

  • As discussed above, this part of the vision has its culmination in a church plant, Lord willingly. But on the journey to this realization there will be much exercising of these gifts as to be diligent in confirming this calling (2Pe 1:10)
  • There will be a discipleship process happening through Patreon to all who are willing to walk this journey with me.

Concept of “the few”

The idea behind, what I call “The Few” stems from a desire I’ve had from many years past, even if I think back, this desire was strangely present from the start of my Christian walk and even in my vague awareness of it, I have held onto it believing that maybe it would be true.
What would be true? That God would choose to use an undeserving sinner like me to engage with the weighty influence that comes from being submitted to the authority of the Holy Scriptures. Now it must be said that while some men have faith for the majority, I do not. Now I do have faith for the few. Having diligently considered the cost of ministering the Gospel I’ve been encouraged to take the little that has been given to me, and be faithful with it, in the same heart as Mat 25:21 where Jesus teaches the Parable of the Talents. So, the first sense of “The few” are those That God would have me extend this weighty influence towards through the means of Preaching, Teaching, and making music in the understanding of Eph 5:19. This includes all those who will be influenced by this ministry.
The second sense of ‘The Few” is a sobering distinction between two groups of people from Mat 7:13-14 where “The Few” are the true believers that follow Jesus on the way that is hard but leads to life as opposed to “The Many” who take the easy way to destruction. This distinction highlights the nature of my hope for ‘The Few” who would become companions united in the cause of the Gospel which if done in truth and love, will with much hardship separate us from the crowd. Be that as it may, the concept of “The Few” shouldn’t be seen as an amount of people, because the emphasis is not on the numbers, but rather the separation. Those of you that I would begin to call “The Few” in the second sense are those who would support me in helping “The Few” in the first sense through various ministering means as I mentioned earlier. “The Few” in Both senses fall under one body because we all help each other get across the finish line. I hope I’ve shed some light, that when I refer to you as “The Few” on Patreon, it is simply an identity that I stand in hope for you, as you journey with me.

Lyrical content past / present

Discovering my lyrical content is most likely one of the most defining moment I’ve had as an artist, realizing that you have a great gift in your hands, an ability to put words in a unique pattern that influences the way a person thinks, this is powerful, but it is utterly useless when done apart from truth, furthermore in my case the truth of God’s word. For the most part in the past my content has been aimed at the lost. There has been a season whereby I put down the pen for a while to study the scriptures more intensely, this came about after seeking wise counsel to which I heeded, the intention was to study the word before it is spoken, although that will be an ongoing endeavor, I’ve picked up the pen again. I’ve realized there is only so much to say to the lost, namely “repent and believe the Gospel” and the fact that repentance is available to them is Good News as it was to me. But what I must say to the body believers is vast, intricate, delicate, exhorting, encouraging, building, uplifting and God glorifying. Also, considering (2Pet 2) and (Jude1:3) I couldn’t be more intentional in bringing to light that fact that the enemy walks around like a lion seeking whom he may devour. Between the years two thousand and six and two thousand and eight, I released two full studio albums “The Law of Love” and “The Good News” of which I gave a way for free for the purpose of ministry, out of those two albums I had three number one hits on the Christian contemporary charts and my songs are still being played on radio to this day.

Summary

In sharing with you who Law is, and bringing an understanding of what Lawministry is, and in painting a picture of the vision I see, what it is, why I have a passion for it and how I envision it to be a realized, along with a vulnerable insight into how my lyrical content comes to be. In all of this, it is my hope that you would, extend me the grace to continue this ministry, Soli Deo Gloria.
