Jesus told His disciples that the Spirit would lead them into all truth.

The difficulty most often – for them and for us – in finding that truth is in the process of deconstructing some of the religious theology we have emotionally invested in apart from Jesus. The degree to which we are willing to change our thinking about Jesus and the Father becomes a good indicator of whether it’s Jesus or our doctrine that we are actually committed to.

He is the same yesterday, today and forever. However, we do change, as does our understanding of Him along the journey. A journey which began with twelve men whose understanding of God was neatly squared away in Scripture, only to be radically reinterpreted and unveiled in the Word who became flesh and dwelt among them.

We aren’t called to shut off our minds when we enter into faith. Paul said to not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that by testing you may prove what is the will of God. For the Apostle Paul, Jesus wasn’t simply an addition to his study and practice of Judaism. The God who Paul committed his life and study to did not change in his conversion. On the contrary, what changed was Paul’s understanding of God’s nature and character, only now fully revealed in Christ. It was in light of Jesus that Paul was able to deconstruct his traditions and interpretations of Scripture, bringing to an end the days of groping for Yahweh in the shadows. He could now reach out in assurance and faith, grabbing hold of the substance now revealed in the face of Jesus.

God has given us His Spirit, not as a ticket to heaven, but as a guide calling us to follow Him by faith in renewing our minds after the pattern of Jesus, who Himself became for us the Wisdom of God.

Our hope is to provoke thought and faithful questioning – free from obligation to agree or disagree – in an age where unquestioned obedience is not only thriving but encouraged.
