This bit will be short-ish, because if you want to read, there are plenty of my words around  - details of my various web word depositories are at the end of this intro.

I'm no longer looking for Patreon backers - i've decided it's better to go for one-off or crowdfunding - but if you've read my books and want to know more about me, this is here for you. If you'd like to help out with actual dollars, see my Twitter page, there's a Paypal link there.

I'm Lee Abrey. I’m a writer, songwriter, poet, blogger, and - down the list - a photographer and visual artist. I'm also an independent publisher. I'm Australian, studied Creative Writing at university, and worked in mainstream publishing. I've been in bands and i worked in the biz side of the music biz. My other interests are varied, but let's do a quick list - horses, architecture, food.. wait, you just need to read the books, i manage to shoehorn most stuff in there.

For some time now i've been trying to sell books on the internet. For much longer, i've been trying to sell my songs around the world (even before the internet). I've learned a lot, mostly about how not to do it.

Why Support Me?
My fiction
is "top rated" (very well reviewed - and not just by friends). I've been favourably compared to greats like Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Robert Heinlein, Philip K Dick, and Connie Willis.

However, despite the glowing reviews, without some kind of promotional and advertising budget, i can't sell enough books to become financially independent.

I write stories people love. Poems that touch them or make them smile. Songs they want to hear again. I'm just not good at getting them out there. Or at least i wasn't.

My word-editing skills are superlative (though if you found a typo here, i'll admit nobody's perfect), and have been honed by working in mainstream publishing. I can usually spot a typo at 50 paces, a gift i inherited from my mother.

I really enjoyed doing the covers this time (and let's pause to thank artists - the ones who let me use their work - and Photoshop, for letting me look like i know what i'm doing).

Yep, there's a but coming - BUT both artwork and editing, especially the editing, take time i could use for other writing projects. And my time is limited.

To edit, I have to
put the work down for a while, get some emotional distance, then edit. Edits can take weeks, each level, and each book needs several edits (am i editing for purely typographical errors, word count - to reduce or raise it, for clarity, or am i adding missing background?), plus if I've edited paper copy (an essential level, you see things you missed, every time), i have to transfer all those red-pen notes into the computer.

Lots of fantastic people are trying to make a living doing editing. I know, i used to be one of them, and never managed to make enough to live on despite working every waking hour. Editors deserve payment, but i have no money. So i DIY.

I have plans:
  • other books in the same worlds as my current series
  • more in the life of Polo Shawcross
  • parallel stories
  • books in other genres
  • I'd particularly like to do some graphic novels so if you're an artist who'd like to work on one, hit me up, please (contact deets below), would love to talk

About The Books

Book 1 - Polo Shawcross: The Birthday Dragon
Stayed top of the 'Highest Rated Epic Sci Fi' or 'Highest Rated Epic Fantasy' books on Smashwords for over 6 years, (it wasn't free for those 6 years).

The first book in The Dragon Quartet (comprising my first four released books) which is a twisted adventure in a vivid new world where genesplicing accidentally creates real magic and Men (or Women) might be Dragon.

Polo Shawcross gets his heart's desire and discovers life's more complicated than he imagined. He spends his time like many young people, trying to get laid, taking lots of drugs or getting drunk, wondering what to do with his life, making stupid mistakes, and trying to avoid the members of his family who want him dead. Maybe that last's not normal, but then Polo's not as ordinary as he thinks he is.

It's funny and moving. It's good.
Currently it's also No1 on the Smashwords Charts for Highest Rated Free Books over 100k (aka Epic), (and also No1 on Free Epic Fantasy or Sci Fi).

It's at No 7 of the Highest Rated Free books across the whole site any length, any genre, fiction/nonfiction. I only need a couple of reviews to bump it to No1.

It's rising fast up the Most Downloads charts since i made it free - today on Epic General Sci Fi (Free) it's at 38. (And it's against books that have been out AND free since 2009.)
****
Book 2 - Polo Shawcross: Dragon Soldier, has been out a week as i write this, and about 20 people a day are downloading it, which is pretty good considering i'm not earbashing my Twitter list.

Update - the next two are starting to sell - which is great seeing Book 2's only been out a week.

Why did i make Book 1 free? Simple. I want to be read. Free also encourages people to read it and then keep going with the rest of the series. It's made even more tempting because the next book is also free. (Then we stop that silliness, we need to make a living.)

If you join as a Patron, you get the next two (currently $2.99 USD each) free. Even at the lowest Reward Level. I figure it's worth it, you're the ones who are going to be my biggest help getting the word out about my books because - unlike my Twitter feed or my blog followers, who follow me for a myriad of different reasons - you're here because you like my work.

The next step (with income from the ebooks and Patreon) is:
  1. get the ebooks better-promoted (that should read 'promoted' as i'm not sure me shouting about the books is really promotion)
  2. get published on paper, which will be part of the rewards to my patrons with either a good discount or free depending on patronage level.
  3. both these will expand my market
So - do you think the gamble's worth a few cents a day? More? Your call :)

Level 1 - Cherubim - the Littlest Angels
$1 or more per month
This might seem like a tiny amount, (to match those cute little wings) but every penny helps.
  • With only twenty of you, after about 8 weeks we could start advertising.
  • Alternatively, if even one of you reviews the books and shouts a lot (or maybe tweets a few times a day, like me), it might raise sales to the point where - with just you and me - we get there.

What you get for your money

  • You'll be gifted $5.98 (USD) in ebooks - Gift Codes for 100% discount on BOTH the last 2 ebooks of the Dragon Quartet, usually $2.99 each (the first 2 are free to anyone here).
  • Use the code yourself, for presents, spread the love around and pass it on. Tweet it, tell a friend, post on social media, use as a  prize on your own site - that's fine. But you can't sell them. That's a deal breaker.
  • Remember, each code is good for 1 use (but only lasts 4 weeks so use it soon!)
  • With new ebooks (if you continue your patronage) -  as they're released you'll get a new 100% off code, usually valued at $2.99. (Limit 1 use)
  • Early access to books and merchandise along with being able to say what merchandise you think would be great
  • Dialogue with me via comments and polls
  • If you re-sign at the end of the year, I'll repeat the above.

What Else?

  • Access to Patreon-only content
  • There's a post up (visible to Public) to help you decide if i'm the right artist for you. (And at the bottom of About there are links to my free books etc)
  • Sneak peeks of New Work pre-publication, deleted and rewritten scenes and characters, stuff i'm re-working
  • Explanations of writing method.

 ALSO

  • As the print books are released, you'll get some kind of discount - profit margin on these looks like being low (and of course i don't get any freebies), so i can't promise a lot off, but people who support me will in turn get what i can give.
  • NOTE - until i raise the money, i can't afford paper publishing, so this is a future reward.
  • I'll do print on demand (no big print run, only pay 'per book') but i still need the set-up costs, including  stuff like ISBN purchase, design, and the one-off setup fees. However,  thanks  to you, we'll get there sooner.
  • If i can't do a discount on print books, i'll offer something else good.
  • Competitions and merchandise - i'm leaving these until i can get some feedback (what would you like?), and of course merchandise needs funding first.
  • But, if you like the books and leave reviews, that helps, and your patronage will help me get the funding for the first ads, all of which should help build the sales and voila! Mugs. Or something. We can haz competitions! Hey, if the books really take off, we can haz lots!

Woo! Thank you, this will help. Every cent does.

  • Advertising can happen sooner and more often.
  • Please remember your reviews are a massive boost.

What you get for your money

Especially for Level 2

  •  3 questions by you, to me. I'll qualify that. Questions about my writing.
  • i'll answer personally to you via email.
  • I'll also add them as a Patron-only post here, with or without your name attached.
  • If i can't or won't answer a question (which is possible), i'll let you pick another one, but off the top of my  head i  can't think of anything i wouldn't answer, i'm pretty easygoing.
  • I don't mean one word answers, i mean i'll do my best to give an in-depth and thoughtful answer, ideally with jokes.

What Else?

  • See Level 1 but when paper books released, you'll get a discount.

This will be stunning. Five people means it's more than just my best mate and one of my sisters.
