The Luminal Theater

is creating and empowering communities through Black cinema

The Luminal Theater has been hard at work to keep Black art alive through the cinematic arts in Central Brooklyn...and we had a stellar 2017 doing so.

We began our a new outdoor series, the Cinema Garden Party, where we showed films such as “BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez” to mixed audiences in the tranquility of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn based community gardens, allowing us to bond with our neighbors in intimate green spaces

We also programmed the Weeksville Freedom Film Festival, the first-ever film festival at the historic Weeksville Heritage Center, where we shined a spotlight on African diaspora immigrant issues in NYC

We also landed the New York Foundation for the Arts as a fiscal sponsor

Finally, but best of all, we resumed weekly film screenings in Bed-Stuy at the Richard Beavers Gallery.

But let’s move past imagining: It takes a lot of resources to execute such elevated programming. Equipment rentals, artist fees, venue payments, print and online marketing, straight-up manpower -- these things cost!

And while we’ve received a few grants over the years, these amounts are not enough, especially when our vision for the future of Black cinema in Brooklyn is so grand. And mind you, we can pinch a penny tighter than a belt buckle on Thanksgiving night, but even doing that has its limits.

So with that, we are working with Patreon to be able to accept ongoing donations!  Please select the category that works best for you and donate to our worthy cause today.

100% of your contributions go toward Luminal Theater programming and administrative costs.
