About Māhealani Uchiyama

Family, Iʻve decided to give this a try.

First of all, big thanks to all of you who have been so supportive of our non-profit dance center! That work continues, but this portal is to support my individual work as an independent artist.

For those new to Patreon, this is a way to provide ongoing support of artists whose work is meaningful to you. Essentially, you would pledge anything from a dollar on up which would be charged out of your credit card or Paypal account on a monthly basis. The proceeds will help to sustain art making by me. Here is a short video to explain how this all works.

But first, let me introduce myself to those of you who havenʻt met me yet.

I am a dancer and have been so my whole life. Dance has made it possible for me to see and learn about the world in ways I could never have imagined as a child. Teaching hula and Tahitian led me to become a musician, because singing and playing ʻukulele and percussion for my students is a part of being a Kumu (teacher.) Iʻve composed songs and recorded a number of CDs in Hawaiian and Tahitian. Iʻve also authored a book about the beautiful tradition of the hula. My deep regard for ancestral wisdom led me to the mystical musical tradition of the mbira from Zimbabwe. I have taught, studied and performed from Mexico to Washington, DC to Hawaiʻi to Tahiti and Zimbabwe, and for this I am so grateful.

I create because I take delight in exploring the intersection of ideas and diversity. I believe we should celebrate the unique differences and many commonalities we share, and I want to facilitate new and profound ways for us, as an extended human family, to appreciate each other. I hope that my work will inspire curiosity and the desire to delve into other ways of perceiving our world.

Here is a primer page that has videos, music streams and a lot of fun highlights of my activity over the years.

Due to the ongoing Pandemic, all live performances are on hold for the time being. Please do follow me on Spotify.

On the literary front, I am close to releasing my next publication, The Mbira Book, which is a celebration of the beautiful mbira music from Zimbabwe, and written from my unique point of view as one of the few African-American women mbira players in this country. Next, I plan to turn my attention to my memoir of a life in dance from the Civil Rights era of the 1960s through the current times.

Please follow me on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, and I would love it for you to please visit my website and my new online store!
