I'm Kian, a writer in Chicago, and I need time. Can you help?

There's so much I want to write, but writing is exhausting and you need all sorts of time to do it.  I can take care of the exhaustion part -- tea is great! -- but I need your help with the time part.  I need more time than I currently have.

I teach for a living and I love it.  It's a fantastic job in a lot of ways, but it can also be a grueling one and it's definitely a job that expands to fill all available time in one's schedule and life.  So long as I need to keep teaching as much as I do, I'll never be able to write like I'd like to.  Like I need to.

That's where you come in.  You can give me time.

Time's this weird thing, you know?  We seem to be moving through it all the time, but when we try to get hold of it, it's gone.  That's because it's in disguise, though.  It's hiding in our wallets, in our bank accounts, in our paychecks.  And because of this mysterious disguise, you can give me a bit of your time.

I don't need a lot, but the more time you can spare for me, the more I'll be able to write and the better that writing will end up being.  I promise that and you can hold me to my word.

There's no money in writing unless you're fantastically lucky.  I know that and I'm fine with that.  However, because of that, I need to keep using most of my time on other things, like my job.  After all, I've got to pay my rent, buy my groceries, and so on.  So if you like my work, it would mean a lot to me if you'd help me out with a few bucks every month.

But what about rewards, you say?  What do you get in return for helping me?

My answer is: a lot.

First, you get my gratitude.  I mean it.  I will be seriously grateful for your help.

Second, you get fairy tales.  I've been focusing a lot of my energies on fairy tales lately, and you'll get to read them before anyone else.  Twice a month, I'm going to post a patron-exclusive fairy tale here.  Your thoughts and comments and criticisms of them are welcome.  Revised versions of those tales might appear elsewhere later on down the line, but no guarantees.  Eventually, I hope to put a book together.  As my patron, I will thank you for having helped support me in any published version of any of my fairy tales.

Third, you get the knowledge that you're helping me write more than I'd be able to otherwise.  If you like my writing, maybe that's a plus for you.

Fourth, you get notified every time something I write goes public.  Sometimes I write things that you need to pay to read.  Usually those are Dungeons & Dragons adventures and supplements, but almost everything I write, like my film criticism, is freely available and as a patron, you'll always know when something new comes out.  And, at the risk of repetition, the more time this page gives me, the more productive I can be.

And fifth, you get cat pictures.  A lot of cat pictures.  My cats are beautiful and ridiculous and amazingly floofy and since the internet 90% cat pics, porn, and uninformed opinions, these pictures may well be my lasting contribution to society.  Their names are Emony and Maximum Derek.  If you become my patron, you will get to know them very well.

Behold Maximum Derek's yawning glory:

And Emony's ability to sleep anywhere:

If you want more of that -- and who are you kidding, of course you do -- I'll be putting up pictures of both cats pretty regularly here.

OK, I've gone on too long here.  Let me summarize.

Please give me money.  In return you get fairy tales and cat pictures and my eternal gratitude.

A Good Sandwich
$10 or more per month

I don't believe in writer's block, but I do believe in hunger and it really gets in the way of creativity. Thank you for buying me lunch!

  • My deep love and affection

Assigned Viewing
$40 or more per month

You're amazing.  Really amazing.  So amazing, in fact, that you have unlocked a magical power: the ability to summon a movie review from me once per month on any movie you want.  It'll be serious, at least 500 words, and I'll thank you by name for giving me the assignment.  Alternately, I'll make you an AL-legal Dungeons & Dragons character with a full backstory.  I'll even (badly) illustrate it.

  • My deep love and affection
  • A permanent place in my heart
  • Access to patron-only fairy tales and cat pictures
  • Ability to summon a movie review or D&D character once per month
Goals
$16 of $2,000 per month
If I reach $2000 a month, I can afford to quit my job and write full time.  This is the big brass ring, folks, and if I get there, I will double my fairy tale output.  One new tale every week!
