I’m Max Peterson, and I’m a writer, musician, filmmaker, poet, podcaster: a dilettante who believes that art is a marriage of experience and experimentation.

The content that will appear here most regularly is a deep-dive film appreciation podcast called MEASURING FLICKS, which I record with my friend, Karl Hartley. We do four episodes a month on iTunes, but Patreon is the place where we release exclusive companion episodes, covering remakes and sequels of the films we dig into on the pod, along with directors and films that didn't fit into the monthly "Themes" of the main show.

I write stories, poems, plays, comics, and films (which I sometimes produce and direct: the films I make are influenced by my love of Art House, B-Movies, Grindhouse, and Independent cinema).

I’ve recorded rockabilly, blues, drone, rock, country, punk...my approach to music is to blend colors and canvases, experimenting with genres and sonic palettes. A country album written from the perspective of serial killers. A lo-fi album reveling in the unpredictability of guitar feedback.

That sort of stuff.

To everyone who’s read, watched, or listened to my work over the past decade: thank you so, so much. I’m enormously grateful.

The things I do take a lot of time, and sometimes a lot of money (films projects especially): gas, food, lodging, massive external hard drives, lenses, studio time...to say nothing of the actors, musicians, camera operators, audio engineers, and other artists I work with.

Not all my projects will cost the same, but the more budget I have, the bigger the projects I can tackle, the better I can make them, and the more I can pay the creators I work on those projects with.

And I’m going to try to put most of those projects out in the world for free, on Youtube, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, my website: wherever I can. (Some things--big things like feature films--I’ll take around the festivals first, but for the most part, I just want people to see it all, and share it, and dig it.)

So here I am. The great Patreon experiment. To the people who are making the work possible, whether you’re backing me a Buck or a Benjamin:

Thank you.

Thank you so much.

P.S – PLEDGING “PER CREATION”

I decided to charge “Per Creation” rather than “Per Month” because sometimes projects take awhile. If I’m not putting anything out on a given month, Patreon won’t process your pledge that month (or three months, or however long some big project takes).
If I’m on fire, and put out more than one thing in a month, Patreon allows you to CAP your pledge each month, so you’ll never be charged more than what your budget allows. If I don’t do anything in a given month, you won’t be charged anything at all.
And even if you cap your pledge, if I put out THREE things in month, or FIVE things in a month, you’ll still get everything. No punishment for capping!
The “Per Creation” path seems more in line with how I work as an artist.
Tiers
$1 or More Per Thing
$1 or more per creation 0 patrons
Which gives you access to the Patron-Only Feed, where you will find updates and as-I-am-making-things posts. You're supporting me and my art, and I love you for it. You'll also get a shout-out on the Measuring Flicks podcast.
$3 or More Per Thing
$3 or more per creation 0 patrons
Which gives you not only a shout-out and access to the Patron-Only Feed, but to Season Zero of Measuring Flicks as well (seven episodes from me and Karl's first attempt: Bronson, Prisoners, There Will Be Blood, The Wrestler, Ghostbusters, Inglourious Basterds, and Frank. Some of my favorite conversations are in there).
You'll also get downloadable MP3s or PDFs of all listenable/readable content!
$5 or More Per Thing
$5 or more per creation 3 patrons
All the good stuff above, plus Patron-Only Episodes of Measuring Flicks. This is where you'll find us digging into the remakes and sequels to the movies from the public show. This is where you'll find special guest series where we watch every film in a horror series back-to-back with film friends of ours. This is where you'll get the stuff past the edge.
You'll also get behind-the-scenes content: photos from set when I'm making films. Liner notes, lyrics, and essays on songs when I'm making records. If you wonder about the creative process or about the deeper meanings, this is where they are.
Champion of the Arts
$10 or more per creation 2 patrons
You'll get all that good stuff (see above for Good Stuff), and downloadable digital copies of all film projects. Any demos or behind-the-scenes footage are yours!
In addition, your name will appear in the credits of all my film projects!
Let's Get Physical
$25 or more per creation 0 of 15 patrons
Digital downloads are not everybody's cup of tea. Sometimes you just want something to hold, in the long, dark night. Like CDs and DVDs.
A pledge of $25 will get you individualized physical copies of all albums and film projects. The packaging may not be slick and pretty, but it WILL be unique. I’ll write individual notes in the liners: tidbits and influences and small little truths. Throw in some weird, related gifts and stuff, too, probably. If it’s not an album or a film, I’ll send you a hard copy of the Whatever-it-is, if I can. Hand-written poem. Doodled-up copy of the script. You get the idea.
If you're here for Measuring Flicks, you'll also get a shout out as a producer during the last regular episode of every month!
The True Patron of the Arts
$50 or more per creation 0 of 10 patrons
This is a lot of money to pledge to an artist, and I'm insanely grateful. You'll get everything above (except for the "Let's Get Physical Tier", which is limited), and for this level of support, I'll give you Producer Credit on all the film projects and albums I produce while you're supporting me at this tier.
You'll also get to pick the movie for an episode of Measuring Flicks. (One episode per Season.) There will be thanks galore for you in that episode.
You are, truly, a Patron of the Arts.
Goals
$32 of $50 per creation
$50 per creation will cover the cost of maintaining my website, quillandfilmproductions.com, where I host the podcasts, post albums and film projects, and pour my brain out. The podcasts will always be free for the public: this will help me cover the cost of keeping them that way, and make sure there's always a home for the art. Let's celebrate with a thank-you video!
