Hello!
Who am I?
Well...it took me awhile to be able to say this without pretense but I am an artist, a teacher and hopefully soon, a small business owner.

I've been drawing and painting for as long as I'm comfortable admitting but about 13 years ago, I left my previous life and moved to Chicago. I fell in love with everything about this city. I got lost and explored and created and learned shit the hard way and began to know Chicago as a machine. A flawed, organic machine that never ceases to bloom in both beautiful and awful ways.
I graduated in 2009 with a Bachelors of Fine Art with an Emphasis in Art Education from the School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago. That's a mouthful of degree that I have almost ridden into extinction.
Things are changing in Chicago.
Since 2004, I have taught, managed and developed fine art curriculum for a handful of CPS/Chicago Charter schools as well as The School Of The Art Institute-Young Artist Studio programs. It's been a hell of a journey and I think it's beginning to show on my face.
I currently teach at 2 local art studios while also providing after-school art programs, public and private art lessons/workshops to both children and adults through my own start up: Harbinger Arts. ( https://www.harbingerarts.com/ )

Okay, so that's some of my professional resume in a nutshell...

However, I am trying to build something SO much more. I'm kinda done with the red tape from bureaucratic institutions and all these pop-up profit studios telling me what to teach and how my students learn. They have no idea.
I have had (not kidding) THOUSANDS of students in my 13 years of teaching and I do remember almost damn near, every poignant interaction. You see, I actually love teaching. Like...LOVE it. Love it like my heart flutters and I get adrenaline and melt and can get both stern and teary and become a Phoenix kinda love when I see my students progress and feel pride in something that they have created or defined for themselves.
I am a pretty private person but seriously, put me in front of someone who wants to learn something creative, I get obnoxiously enthusiastic. It's the only time that my shell cracks. From teaching a 5 year old how to draw a star to instructing a 60 year old, accomplished painter, wanting to learn how to combine encaustic mediums with photo transfers...that's all there is for me. I'm fulfilled. Done. I always learn through the process as well. This is my passion.
Currently, I am piecing together 3 part-time jobs, working on my own artwork while constantly scheming of ways to open my own studio while affording my own practice with Harbinger Arts. It's a balancing act and it can be hard and it sucks and as we all know, there is always the ugly doubt of being able to pull it off one day. Some days my doubt is a seed...on others, it is a forest.

In the meantime, I am trying to be more prolific and actually produce important, therapeutic work.
Personal work. Paintings. Drawings...tangible things that are in front of me.
Stress makes for great material I guess, right? Yes, but this takes time and energy and "going into the Bell Jar" type of dedication. I believe art is a process and complicated and necessary and terrible and raw and that everything leads to something. I realized the other day that anything that I truly ever love about my work...it's come from my trying to cover up something that I thought was a "mistake". So if I have learned anything, it is that everything is usable and there are absolutely no mistakes. ZERO.  No set-backs. No true waste.
Since Spring, a shift has occurred...I left a terrible job that was sucking the life out of my brain and willpower and I immediately started to produce more art. (Funny how that works, huh? )
In the last few months, in addition to making new work and curating an all female art show, I have co-founded an Artist Collective (Secret Tricks) with my lady-buds from which there has been an influx of positivity and progression that I can not only see...but feel boiling on and under the surface of everything that I encounter.

A handful of very talented friends of mine have suggested that I start this. I'm excited but why is it so terribly hard to say "Hey, I am wanting to produce and grow and provide cool and important stuff to people in order to help THEM grow and produce and provide cool and important stuff to people...want to help me do this?"
I don't know, I guess putting yourself out there and being confident in what you have learned and in who you are is pretty hard.
Is it though?
What I want to build is not impossible but I realize that I cannot do it alone.
So we will see where it leads.
I thank you in advance for your support. You are amazing. We can do great things that matter and that make a difference together.

An excerpt of my artist statement reads:

"I am interested in emblematic and allegorical self-portraiture of an emotionally intimate nature. Currently, my work focuses on the feminine ebb and flow of strength and desire, environmental phenomenon, expectation, isolation, biological patterns, gestation, rhythm and natural occurring color. I enjoy the idea of attracting and repelling through imagery. Every piece I create represents personal concepts of identity, sexuality, beauty, fear, anxiety, trauma and balance."

What are you interested in? What do you create? What fulfills you?
We all have something valuable to offer and share with others. What is your something?
These are questions that I will be exploring in monthly written reflections, images and through video tutorials posted for my patrons.
