Losing a child is something a parent never gets over. It doesn’t matter if that child lived decades, a few years, or was stillborn. Parents are left with a profound sense of emptiness that will never be filled but also a grief over the future memories that can never be made. Brooke Smith and her husband, Colin, know what this grief feels like. They lost a baby who was stillborn at birth. But this is not just their story. Every year in America one in four mothers experience a pregnancy or infant loss. Research shows that with additional pregnancies the risk of further infant loss increases. After their loss, they discovered there was a lack of resources for grieving parents like themselves. The Smiths decided this was unacceptable and decided to do something about it.
They founded The Baby Resource Center, a family run charitable organization that supports expecting families and those affected by pregnancy and infant loss. Some of the services offered include Free Doula Services, Educational Workshops, Monthly Peer Support Groups, Fatherhood Resources, Psychotherapy Grants and Bereavement Grants. They also host NYC's Annual Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Walk, as well as a viral pregnancy and infant loss awareness campaign called #goPINKandBLUE.
