About

A4 Sounds is a nonprofit socially-engaged arts workspace and gallery. Our politics are feminist, antiracist, anticapitalist, and LGBTQ+ inclusive. We provide a range of support to 80+ artists in North Inner City Dublin, and we have a particular goal of supporting cultural workers and activists who fight for social justice.

Your support will help us with studio running costs and our artistic programme each year by allowing us to provide studio space, training, mentoring, technical support and exhibition support for our our artists.

Goals
$49 of $580 per month
Subsidising 20 Artists 25yrs and Under Each Month
$560 per month (€500 per month)

In Oct 2018 we have introduced a new membership rate of €50 per month for 25 year olds and under at our studios. The under 25s are one of many groups adversely affected by the housing crisis and living costs of Dublin City resulting in them being essentially locked out of their futures. The knock-on effect, which we have witnessed, is that younger artists cannot access studio spaces in the city. This prevents them accessing essential resources which allow them to start their careers, forcing many out of the city, abroad or to give up on their practice.

An artist graduating in fine art now has very few opportunities or supports available to them, including employment opportunities in their field. This means many artists are dependent on social welfare payments. For artists that are 25 years old their payment is only €131 per week and artists 24 and under their payment is only €107 per week, meaning a studio space is not an option.

We planned on offering 10 of these memberships to artists as we could not afford to offer more. Since launching the number of artists in the age bracket applying to our studio skyrocketed and we realised that, yes there are many, many talented artists in need of studio space so we removed the cap.

We now support 22 artists in the tier.

Unfortunately we cannot afford this rate, and as a result we have to reduce the hours available for support staff for our members.

The current value of this subsidy is equvilent to 1 day per week for a studio technician.

Benefits for the Artist
  1. Subsidised access to studio space, facilities and resources
  2. Develop as professional artists in a supportive environment
  3. Have access to a large community of artists
  4. Ease some of the pressures of living in Dublin City
  5. Have access to trainned staff and ongoing facility support
  6. Be provided with a safe and happy work environment
