Most people don’t know how my travel journey began. They assume out of nowhere I started taking trips, writing about them and posting enviable photos. But it’s been quite the road I've traveled down, one I wouldn’t trade for anything despite having an unexpected jolt to start. I got my passport only nine years ago, because at the time I wanted to travel to Jamaica to do volunteer work. I searched online for where I could put in my application, got all my things together (including the passport photos I had taken at CVS) and sent in everything for an expedited passport.

Then I got it back and my name was misspelled. What did I say? Nothing about the beginning of my travel journey has been typical!

Through several phone calls, a shoddy explanation as to why that could’ve happened and overnighting my passport back so it could be corrected, I got it back in less than a week later. And then I was on my way to Kingston.

Traveling internationally for that first time is something now, almost a decade later, I have trouble profoundly articulating. I felt home in sense, at ease. Sensory overload taking in all the foreign (to me) smells, sounds and sights. Eating spicy beef patties and drinking kola champagne from a shop on a corner, filled with moving bodies and the crinkling sound of the paper each patty is encased in.

Four years later, I moved to Madrid in attempt to alter my life for deeper fulfillment and to discover my own voice + impact I wanted to have on the world around me. I had grown weary with becoming a sum and puppet of the expectations I’d carried on my back. I wanted to be me, whatever me was. I didn’t know who or what that was back then.

But now I do.

And that knowing has propelled me forward in many ways, particularly in my writing career. I’ve written travel pieces for Travel + Leisure, The Wall Street Journal, The Independent, The Four Seasons, Marriott, American Way (American Airlines in-flight magazine), The High Life (British Airways in-flight magazine), Fodors, New York Magazine, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dallas Morning News, Well + Good and many more.

I created Afros y Paella, a blog that served as a space to explore my inner musings, along that road to discovery as both a Black American and African woman. It is through my layered identities that I approach travel and how I see the world at large. And now this space is intended to be a deeper, fuller expansion of what I created almost five years ago. I want to go deep. I want to be...more true.

Here’s the vision I have for this Patreon for those who choose to support me along in this journey: creating the immersive, multimedia travel content I’ve been yearning to create but have yet to find a true space for nor funding to substantiate the depth of my efforts.

Each month, I’ll take you to a city somewhere in the world and all content that month will be derived from that destination. Twice a month patrons will have access to photo essays transporting you to the city through visuals (second Wednesday of every month) in addition to micro (written) essays + audio dispatches consisting of my reflections on said city (fourth Wednesday of every month). I also envision adding more content such as travel guides, videos (including behind-the-scenes glimpses into my travel writing life and travel adventures in general) and whatever you, my audience would love to see (within reason of course).

If you want in on this amazing, wild ride and to get a closer glimpse of the travel and exploration that is central to my heart and this life as I know it, here’s your chance. Join me and strap in for a journey of a lifetime.
