About Aleksandra Kalisz

Who am I?
I am a Polish artist. I was born in Gdynia, Poland in 1992. I studied Fine Art in the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and got Master Degree in 2016. In 2014 I participated in LLP Erasmus programme in Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain. Currently I'm living and working in Guimaraes, Portugal. I specialize in painting, drawing and installation. My art is a reflection of traditions and my experiences.

What brought me to Patreon?
As an emerging I face the problems of reality :) It is difficult to make living just out of painting.  Most of the competitions and exhibitions are paid- and sometimes it's far too expensive. To create art you need time and money (for the materials and promotion). Many artists are forced to find job which creates a problem- you have money but you don't have time to create. That's why I chose Patreon- to make my dream come true. To become a full time artist!

My current projects "Act of pattern" and "Thread of Femininity"

The project "Act of pattern" is a series of paintings where I focus on traditions. I paint female figures covered in patterned materials and place them in colorful backgrounds. The ornaments that I use are mainly from Middle East. My aim is to combine two different cultures: European (female nude) and Muslim (ornaments). My art is an answer to current events. Europe is having a hard time to accept immigrants and the refugees are having difficulties to adapt. Both cultures have rich traditions which evolved in different ways. Europe has been focusing on human body while Middle East countries due to their religion have been expressing their art in geometrical ornaments. I want to show that our cultures can create something beautiful. The idea of the project originated from my travel to Spain where I spent almost a year. The south of the country is rich in culture where at some point Catholic, Islamic and Jewish people were living together. Their traditions mixed and created a style called "mudejar". Seeing extraordinary architecture inspired me to use it in my art in more modern way. I want the audience to open to foreign cultures through art.
In the project “Thread of femininity” I still use ornaments but this time laces that are originally from Europe. The main subject is female emotions. Even though I don’t paint portraits I am showing the feelings through body language. I study female nature and focus on the delicate and sensitive aspect of it. The laces highlight that.

My portfolio

$0 of $100 per month
I have found a studio where I can work. It's an amazing place where I can focus on painting and store my artworks. It would be awesome to keep it! The rent is 100 euros per month!
