I am the director of a start-up social entrepreneurship/ NGO called Alticultura. We are changemakers using an innovative model that combines elements of sustainable economic development and long-term climate change resilience. The end result is an approach that empowers individuals, groups, and communities to define create, and live their own visions, based on their own values; while tackling tough world issues related to both CO2 emission reductions and navigating the changing landscape that climate change is creating. We like to say, we do more than bring projects; we create genuine human capital. We teach people how to be their own champions.

We are located in the rural highlands of Western Guatemala, but our work is relevant to much of Latin America, the Caribbean, and other high-altitude locations throughout the world. We are dedicated to bridging the gap between science and practice.

I am focused on the creation of 5 types of creative endeavors, through our NGO as through my own individual efforts.

  • 1)Informational blog posts about climate change related topics, and the maintenance of two professional Facebook pages dedicated to thoughtful climate change information and discourse for the public. Alticultura Facebook page Guatemala climate change information page
  • 2)Climate change research into the socio-economic vulnerabilities of highland communities and into the ways that weather is changing- how fast, how frequently, how intensely, and how differently. The research will be made publicly available, in two languages (English and Spanish). I am currently finishing three large research projects in climate change perception, presentation, and resilience-based adaptation.
  • 3)Pilot programs that explore the potential of Innovative adaptation practices from all over the world, that fill socio-economic needs and provide income based on human dignity and value. Examples underway currently include an experimental biochar soil restoration site, designs for a Bolivian style insulated greenhouse, and collaboration with the Savory Institute to create Central America’s first holistic land management training center.
  • 4)Short courses for individuals and organizations related to specific topics in integral development, and Long courses for individuals interested in advanced-level certification and decision-making in climate change adaptation. Our course catalog currently contains over 30 offerings, with flexibility to custom-design course content. Our courses are partly client-funded and partly self-funded, to make them accessible to the people who can most benefit from them.
  • 5)Community integrated development projects that combine research, innovation, and best practices to create income based on sustainable development; and/or create solutions to emerging problems. On-going examples of our work include a chicken genetic selection project, a collaboration using art to tell the climate change story, and the development of a network of environmental education and eco-tourism professionals. We are presenting a project to create a network of youth climate ambassadors, as well.
I have relied upon my own life savings (literally), work, and small donations to fund all of this work so far. I am grateful for every $5 donation that has kept us going so far. I realize that to take the next step, I and my organization need greater financial stability than we currently have experienced. I am reaching out far and wide to have our great work promoted. I think we have a lot to offer our donors, in the form of seminars, workshops, presentations, courses, and, most importantly; program content designed to produce real impact and measurable human results. I appreciate any and all support we can receive for this work. Please check back often for examples to previous and on-going efforts by myself and the incredible team of Guatemalan changemakers that we have put together.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

As a thank you, when when we reach this amount,  I will interview and document one patron/ month- promoting their work on my blog site and promote their work and business (if applicable) on Facebook.
