About Anna Brake
I founded Breath Mark Retreat, an event with the collaboration of a music festival and the focus and intimacy of a creative artist residency. It is devoted to allowing creative people space to collaborate on musical works, discuss how to build community, develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle, explore other creative outlets, build friendships, and use natural techniques to create robust mental health. It is the only one of its kind (so far! that I know of). The inaugural retreat was in October 2018. We want to provide accessibility to creative people of all income levels and expand our reach in years to come.
In 2019 I will be launching a YouTube series to empower creative people. Creatives have certain traits, characteristics, and skills that when left unbridled can lead to stress, depression, anxiety, and other illnesses, but when balanced can lead to happiness, creative flow, success, and deep fulfillment. This series will help viewers shift their routines and perspectives to wellness by using the characteristics and skills they already possess. Examples include: How perfectionism often emerges as anxiety but when kept in check can be a tool for excellence. How creatives often break the mold and don't think like other people, which can manifest as impostor-syndrome but has the potential for ground-breaking work.
I compose music that inspires wellness for everyone. This includes the flute, clarinet, viola, cello quartet Breath It In. The six movements are each based on an essential oil--fragrance as sound! It also includes Silver Songs a piece written for Megan Ihnen, voice and Alan Theisen, saxophone. The three songs each describe a less-than-ideal situation and then a change in perspective to see the silver lining. I communicate in many ways, but most directly through music.
I inspire others to be well-rounded, and I am too. When I'm not planning retreats and composing music, I am reading, writing, sewing, singing, hiking, drawing, traveling, connecting with others, doing yoga, meditating, and playing with my little orange and white cat, Tansy.
