Hey there! I’m Ben – a pastel artist living in Cambridge, MA. Although I studied Computer Science at MIT, and currently work as an engineer and researcher, my biggest passion has always been drawing. I'm a big believer that art and engineering are complementary, rather than conflicting interests. Soft pastels have been my medium of choice for almost 15 years. I love to draw scenes with rich gradients of color and strong geometric patterns. I often simplify my subject matter to focus on beautiful colors and structures, but at times I apply a photorealistic effect when it best captures the beauty of an object.

After I graduated from MIT, I've become very involved in the high tech, innovation world. But I've also come to realize, more than ever, that I need to work on strategies to keep me drawing and painting more consistently. Having an audience via Patreon to cheer me on – and share my work with – has proven to be a real motivator.

Your support keeps my creativity flowing. And I hope my work brightens your world, too. So thank you for being part of my Patreon team. It is hugely appreciated!

While I have a public gallery of my work at facebook.com/artbyben, I usually only post finished works of art there. This Patreon page is a way for me to share the full creative process with my supporters. When I post a drawing, I show you the art behind the art – sketches, color palettes, step-by-step images of in-progress drawings, as well as high resolution images you can download as wallpapers or to print for personal use. I want my patrons to feel like you're in the studio with me, watching my drawing come to life with commentary at each step.

With more support, I hope to invest in even better art supplies, including softer pastels (I'm dreaming of getting some Senneliers and Unisons), a set of oil paints (Winsor & Newton), and larger canvases. I also hope to produce time-lapse videos of the creation process for your enjoyment and education. I may even have the resources to publish an ebook for my supporters with an extensive collection of curated artwork and behind-the-scenes processes. You’ll also be the first community I go to when asking for inspiration for future work, and you’ll be the first to know if any original pieces go on sale.

How this works:
  • You choose an amount to donate for each high-quality finished work I produce. Even a dollar helps a lot!
  • I'll never publish more than three paid pieces per month, and you can also set a limit on how much you're willing to donate per month and you'll never get charged more than that.
  • As long as you're subscribed, you'll get VIP access to behind-the-scenes process images, sketches, art previews, time-lapse videos, giveaways, and more! (See the rewards section for more details.)
  • If enough people join as patrons, you'll get even more rewards! (See the goals section for more details)
