Atta Otigba: Breaking through the Noise

Goals and Context
If you're reading this there's a good chance you heard of me or my music though an ad.

In the period spanning April of 2018 to date, I have released 6 songs, distributed internationally across all the major music streaming services. 4 of those 6 releases were accompanied by digital advertising budgets. Through extensive experimentation and testing I currently find that I need to allocate a budget of between 600 to 1000 dollars on advertising expenditure per song released, to achieve a reasonable return on that investment in terms of exposure: Since my first song release approximately one year ago, these marketing efforts have currently built an audience of listeners across Europe, North America, Asia and Latin America, with the aforementioned 6 songs garnering over 100,000 streams on Spotify alone to date.

This patreon seeks support to offset the cost of digital advertising, primarily to international users of the music streaming service, Spotify - the world's largest streaming service - in conjunction with targeted YouTube and Apple Music advertising campaigns.

Spotify in particular, provides the primary metrics by which the success of this strategy is measured. Success on Spotify depends greatly on triggering its internal algorithm in such a way that the platform effectively magnifies whatever promotional efforts an artist makes and - based on the data it collects from these efforts - delivers the artist's music to a potential audience of millions. This results in exposure to an extent that would be cost prohibitive for most independent musicians without the algorithm’s help.

Triggering this algorithm and consequently building an engaged audience is the basis of my approach. With a consistent and frequent release strategy, triggering this algorithm becomes demonstrably predictable. For instance, every song that I have funded has reached an audience far in excess of what would be considered its ‘expected reach’ based on the budget spent: this is the algorithm being triggered to take the initiative and deliver the product to thousands of consumers it knows will react positively to it. The data I have gathered in the past year clearly shows this.

To achieve growth with consistency, every release must be accompanied by an appropriate budget. As momentum builds, less and less funding will be required to maintain growth. Releasing music without an appropriate budget in this manner, however, is an exercise in futility – It will reach no one. Therein lies the need for sponsorship - and this Patreon page.

With your support, at the end of a one year period, I expect to have grown my current 10,000 strong monthly listenership tenfold to around 100,000 listeners. For context on what this implies financially, a million streams on Spotify pays around 4,000 dollars in streaming royalties. The same number of streams on Apple's proprietary streaming service, Apple Music, pays around 7,000 dollars. In addition to several opportunities resulting from a more visible brand, eventually having a steady flow of a few million streams across streaming platforms every year (commonplace for many artists with a hundred thousand monthly listeners and over) will also provide a decent source of passive income in addition to my current work as a record producer and my other business activities.

Current Work and Prior Funding
Since 2013 I have worked as a record producer. Notable albums to my credit include "And the Bass is Queen" by Lindsey Abudei (2016), "Broken to Peace" by Jessica Bongos Ikwue (2017), and "Stark" by Bemyoda (2017).  A sampling of my songwriting and production credits can be found on my website at www.attaotigba.com/work

I also frequently perform my original material, with a band, at paid concerts and corporate events for a fee.

It is from this income that I have funded my ad campaigns until now. Unfortunately, investing that much on a regular basis is difficult to sustain without some form of sponsorship. To keep things going I could either sign with a label - and possibly lose my creative freedom (and sanity anyone?) - or I could start this Patreon.

Pretty easy decision.

Proposed Budget
I am aiming to raise around 500 to 1000 dollars a month to facilitate the development, recording and targeted digital marketing of 5 to 10 song releases in the next one year. I will accompany each release with an appropriate budget based on these funds. Releases will occur monthly or bi-monthly from now till the end of 2019 and beyond, depending on the funds available.

Translation
If all that makes no sense to you then try this: Supporting this project is one meaningful way to support my music. Every dollar you contribute will directly be used to get the music heard and the word spread. Because if a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it... Maybe it never really fell.

Thank you for reading this. And thank you for being here. stick with me.

We're on to something.
