What is the Behavioral Scientist?

The Behavioral Scientist is a digital and (now!) print magazine. Our mission is to make the valuable insights gathered from behavioral science accessible and useful to society. We publish commentaries and conversations on current events, culture, and research.

Who is the Behavioral Scientist for?

In short, everyone. We strive for each of our articles to contain something valuable for readers—an insight that can help people better understand and improve the world or their lives.

Why is your support important?

First and foremost, your support ensures access to original, high-quality behavioral science commentary and reporting for everyone. Ideas and research from the behavioral sciences influence all aspects of society, including policy, education, business, technology, health, and the environment. For too long, many of the useful insights and ideas coming out of these disciplines has been hard to reach. Everyone deserves to have access to the ideas that influence their lives.

We are a small and dedicated team. Recurring subscriptions on Patreon provide a source of predictable revenue, allowing us to plan further in advance. Your support means we can continue to provide high quality, original commentaries from leaders in behavioral science on our website and in our weekly email edition.

Your support will also allow us to cover the latest developments from the frontlines of behavioral science in new and creative ways. We will be able to develop special issues, original cartoons, long-form pieces, art, and multimedia.

How does your support on Patreon work?

Think of Patreon like a subscription service. Your monthly contribution is applied directly to our mission. While we used the power of defaults to create 3 suggested levels of support, we wouldn’t want to anchor you too much—you can also support us any amount you choose through the custom option.

Supporters at the $5/month and higher level, will receive physical tokens of our appreciation with an annual gratitude pack featuring some Behavioral Scientist swag, and a copy of our inaugural print issue.

All contributions are tax deductible, and you can change or opt-out of your support at any time (we’re not into #sludge).

What readers are saying:

“The Behavioral Scientist does a beautiful job of making the best that psychology has to offer available to the public, simply and accurately, in a language that any educated person can understand. It is a gift to us all.”
— Barry Schwartz, Emeritus Professor of Psychology, Swarthmore College and Visiting Professor, Haas School of Business, U.C. Berkeley

“The Behavioral Scientist is a playground for every curious observer of human behavior, offering engaging and insightful coverage of the field’s best research.”
— Heather Caruso, Assistant Dean, Executive Director, and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Management and Organizations at UCLA Anderson

“The Behavioral Scientist is a go-to magazine of mine and a fantastic resource for anyone interested in behavioral science and its real-world applications. Always insightful, surprising, and entertaining.”
— Siri Chilazi, Research Fellow, Women and Public Policy Program, Harvard Kennedy School

“Given the rate at which we are learning about behavioral science, and the even faster rate at which experts are applying it to everyday life, the field has earned its own, dedicated publication. And what a publication it is. Super smart, relatable, actionable intelligence wrapped in terrific writing and editing. It's an invaluable asset to a decision-maker or those trying to influence them.”
— Fuzz Hogan, Managing Editor, New America

“I love this site so much, and visit it so often, I would be happy to donate the URL behaviouralscientist [dot] org as a first birthday present, saving me the mild pain I experience when typing behavioral without a "u".”
— Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman of Ogilvy UK
