Café Royal Books is an independent publishing house based in Southport, England. I publish an ongoing series of titles, the broad subject of which is British Documentary Photography since 1960. This includes international photographers working within the British Isles, and photographers from the British Isles working internationally.

This type of work has historically been neglected, in the UK and overseas by major institutions. It is often neglected by the photographer too, possibly because there has been no outlet, as such, for it. What I hope to do with Café Royal Books is source, gather, and re/present this work as a collective whole. I publish at least one title every week, each title presenting, one series by one photographer. Every 100th title, I publish a limited edition boxed set of those 100 books — aimed really at public collections, so the books remain accessible.

There are lots of interviews online, where I answer questions around process and reasons. For example, the British Journal of Photography, Photoworks, The Photographers' Gallery. I also keep a blog about the subject, surrounding ideas and related work.

The publications I make have carved their own path. I want the books to be affordable, democratic, utilitarian and useful, without fuss or decoration. As well as being available online and on the high street, they are collected by MoMA, Tate, V&A, The Hyman Collection, Martin Parr Foundation and many more institutions worldwide — making the books publicly acccessible.

I work almost full time as a lecturer in Fine Art. In 2018 I have decided to take a reduction in teaching to push Café Royal Books (which is just me) more than I can do currently. I’m new to Patreon, so to keep things simple for now I’m matching the Café Royal Books monthly subscription I offer on the website as a ‘reward’ for a monthly payment of £50 / $66US. At the end of each paid month you will be sent that month’s publications – usually 5/6.

All payments below that amount will go towards the running and functioning of Café Royal Books.
