Now that 2019 is here, I've decided to switch things up. I earned my MFA in Creative Writing at Stonecoast in July 2018, and I've been run generative writing workshops at The Storied Imaginarium for the last two and a half years. Participants in my workshops have been publishing far and wide, but my own writing has stalled somewhat. With a schedule filled running workshops at  The Storied Imaginarium and teaching a full load of freshman composition at Pikes Peak Community College, it can be a daunting task to find time for my own writing. That needs to change.

For a while now, I've been wanting to create a fairy tale book of poetry, in addition to my current works-in-progress. I find poetry to be an enjoyable outlet, especially during times when it seems I'm especially pressed by outside commitments. This year, I've decided to take the plunge, and I will be writing snippets of poems, prose, and prompts all linked to the first of Andrew Lang's fairy books. The Blue Fairy Book (1889), which was the first of twelve fairy tale collections published by Lang, will be the source of my morning work for 2019. There are 37 tales in The Blue Fairy Book, which includes seven tales from the Brothers Grimm, five from Madame d'Aulnoy, three from the Arabian Nights, and four Norwegian fairytales, among other sources. Every ten days, I will be posting one of the fairy tales along with my notes of potential links, mash-ups, and outside sources. Other posts will include commentary on the original authors and collectors of these tales, links to contemporary retellings, and classic fairy tale illustrations. It's going to be a fun ride, and I hope you will join me on this adventure.

Happy Writing!

Carina Bissett
