Hi, I'm Chimene. I'm a writer from London who currently lives in Brooklyn. I write about race, politics, gender, Islamophobia, and identity. There's certainly more than enough to say about all of that these days. I've written for the Guardian, The Independent, The Quietus, International Business Times, Media Diversified, The Pool, The Debrief, to name a few.

Excitingly, I'll be editing The Good Immigrant USA (Little, Brown/Dialogue 2019), which will take on the same format as the award-winning best-seller The Good Immigrant (Unbound 2016), of which I was a contributing essayist! It's a project I'm deeply proud of. Aside from people of colour being in charge of our own narratives finally, we aim to platform as many writers of colour that we possibly can. It's really important for me to support the community that's been supporting me for so long.

Oh, I also started out on the London spoken word and poetry scene, and have a poetry collection called Outside Looking On (Influx, 2014) that was mentioned in a Guardian's Best Books of 2014 list.

A little bit of other stuff about me includes knowing that I'm a North London girl, hooped earrings and all. My family are Turkish Cypriot, which is something that also crops up in a lot of my work. I'm mostly obsessed with UK Garage, totally obsessed with dogs, and plan to be Stevie Nicks when I grow up. I've been collecting photos of Canary Wharf for a few years, which is hard to fully explain, other than seeing it makes me feel less lonely.

I spend a lot of time educating or trying to change things for free. It's definitely worth it, but it can really take its toll when you remember how much free emotional labour women of colour are expected to do. Not to mention all the pretty gross harassment.

This is where you can help - talking for free and being freelance doesn't always give me the secure space I need to write about other things that matter globally, and personally. There are a lot of projects that I'd love to share with you that I haven't sadly had the financial freedom to create in full.

I won't stop working on the social issues that matter, or trying to find balance to write on so much more, so if you enjoy my work and thoughts, you supporting this with whatever you can give would really go a long way for me. Thanks for stopping by.

Thank you! Supporting my work means a lot - so much so, I'll send you links to a different UK G track a month and we can enjoy the timeless nostalgia together!
Extra thoughts, and Q&A
$10 or more per month
You're so kind! This is a bit like taking me out for a drink (white wine with ice) and for that you get (as well as the above) to ask me any questions (keep it clean!) about anything at all. Writing tips, support, dog breeds, or even the best pubs or bars to go in London or New York! Totally up to you!
Customised bit of writing
$25 or more per month
Thanks! This definitely means a lot. With this you'll get your own customised poem or medium sized bit of writing about a topic or theme of your choice. As well as all the other bits above.
Personal writing
$100 or more per month
It's a lot to ask for and I wouldn't blame you for thinking no way! You'd be going a long way to really helping me write and explore all the topics that matter to me and hopefully you too. As a huge thank you (as well as all of the above), I will share with you some of my writing that will reveal more about me as a person and what I've experienced that month, away from the lens of mainstream media and worrying about what the masses think.
The Good Immigrant USA signed book
$200 or more per month
Wow wow wow. All the gratitude in the world wouldn't be able to thank you enough for this. I can't tell you how much you would be helping me write so much more. With all the thanks and love in the world you would be one of the first to get a signed copy of The Good Immigrant USA on release in 2019. I promise you, it's going to be a hit and you're gonna want one of these anyway!

When I reach this much I'll be able to breathe a sigh of relief that my work and thoughts are being taken seriously and I'll be able to give even more, phew!
