About Cithryth

Who are you, and what do you do?
I'm a freelance writer and podcaster based in New Zealand who focuses on MMOs and 'artsy' indie games. I write a few articles every week analyzing some aspect of gaming or reviewing and suggesting games I think you might enjoy to my blog, Keyboard Paladin.

What makes you different from all the other game blogs?
You'll find no review scores here - I believe that games are a completely subjective experience and an arbitrary number won't really give you an idea of whether you'll like a game or not. And since gaming is so subjective, I end each review suggesting the game to different types of people - "If you like really hardcore puzzles, you'll like this," rather than saying it's "good" or "bad" based on my sole experience. Everyone gets something different out of games, and with my reviews I try to be conscious of that.

I also write longer-form analytic thought pieces looking at game genres and the industry. I usually focus on niche genres or ideas and talk about how they formed and analyze specific parts of them. In the past I've written about how history helps make city-builders more engaging and how the "roguelike-like" genre has evolved.

On top of all the games writing, I have a Weekly Original Content initiative where I make sure to create something original - a short story, a drawing, a comic, a poem, whatever - every week. While I enjoy writing and producing content centered around games, I also realize the importance of creating something entirely your own, not focused on someone else's creation.

So why do you need my money?
I try to make a living through my writing. Freelancing is definitely part of it, but I don't think anyone would argue with wanting to get paid to write things you really enjoy writing about. By supporting this Patreon, you'll help put food on the table for me and my family and cats, keep us healthy, all that important stuff. But most importantly for you, you'll be helping me to continue writing more stuff for you and others to enjoy. It takes money and time to fuel this blog, your support keeps it going.

Okay, but why Patreon? I don't want to pay every month...
I totally understand the reluctance to sign up for a monthly, on-going donation thing. But the thing is, this isn't some project launch I'm raising money for or some big one-off event. This is an everyday thing, so it requires on-going support. Even if you just pledge $1 a month, that's only $12 a year. And when enough people do it, it adds up!

Also, if you really have a hang-up about continued donations and want to do a one-off donation, send me a message through my blog or Twitter and we can work something out.
$0 of $30 per month
I'll do a game giveaway of a recently released indie game!
