About ClearHealthCosts

ClearHealthCosts is bringing transparency to the health care marketplace by telling people what stuff costs.

Our tools: Shoe-leather journalism, data journalism, crowdsourcing and investigative reporting. We do our work both on our home site, and in partnership with other newsrooms nationwide. We're like a mashup of Kayak.com and the Waze traffic app for data, and we use the data to create journalism.

Why? Health costs are out of control. No one knows what things cost.  Watch our CEO, Jeanne Pinder, describe the company in her hit TED talk on TED.com.

With our work:
  • We save people money. We helped this woman save $3,786.
  • We help people navigate the health care system by telling them what questions to ask.
  • We have made change at the policy level: The Louisiana Legislature passed a consumer protection bill after we started covering this topic with our New Orleans partners.
  • We have won a ton of journalism prizes
  • We build trust between our journalists and our communities.

How does Patreon work, or what you’ll get when you join us
Our supporters join our community by giving us regular subscription-type support on an ongoing basis, and receive rewards shown on the right -- like patron-only events and our newsletter. Also, you get the satisfaction of helping us flourish and help people -- and work to change the system.

Why we’re doing this Patreon
  • More time to create great transparency journalism
  • Deeper connections with the people who are experts in this field, members of our community of people and businesses passionate about transparency
  • People have asked how they can support us
  • We want to avoid popups and paywalls

How else do we make money?
Our news partners pay us to: 1) customize our software for their sites, 2) do our pricing survey in their metro area for their database, and encourage crowdsourcing, 3) consult with them on making great journalism. Examples here and here.

Newsrooms are short on money these days, so this has proven to be a challenging business model.

For businesses: We're talking to you, too
Are you the chief financial officer or a human resources executive at a business? You have good reason to be outraged: Businesses are carrying a huge burden on health costs. We can help you save too. Ask about our Corporate Projects on the right.

What they're saying about us
“Now health care is getting its Kayaks and Trulias.” “Revealing a Health Care Secret: The Price,” The New York Times.

“When people see this data, [Pinder] says, ‘they don’t behave the same way in the marketplace again.’” “How to Cut Your Health Care Bill: Pay Cash,” The Wall Street Journal.

Our editorial policy
We tell people what things cost. We are journalists, not advocates. We are nonpartisan -- we take no political position. We think people should know what stuff costs.

Thanks for your support!
