Welcome to Cloth Map! My name's Drew. I'm exploring the people, places, and cultures of the world through the lens of games, and making sweet videos about it. Join me, won't you?

Who?

You may know me from Giant Bomb, where I worked for eight years making videos about IcelandE3, and roller coasters. One time, I blinked weirdly.

Okay so what’s Cloth Map?

Cloth Map is a video series that explores how games impact the lives of people around the world. So far we've been to...

  • Ukraine to see (among other things) Chernobyl, which has provided inspiration to countless games and media over the years
  • Brazil, where economic restrictions can create an alternate video game reality
  • Cuba, where citizens built their own city-wide gaming network out of nothing but rebar and ingenuity
  • Mongolia, where the entire nation gets together to celebrate the games of Genghis Khan
  • And most recently the Balkans, which is experiencing a game resurgence in the wake of a devastating conflict

Games are a universal concept, but can take drastically different forms from culture to culture. By exploring these differences, I hope to not only expand our definition of “games,” but also remind ourselves that no matter our background, everyone on Earth loves having a good time.

I’m new to Patreon, how does this work?

Most of the videos I produce live on YouTube, available for free to everyone. However, if you’d like to support me, you get access to Patron-only stuff depending on your level of contribution (see the Rewards column on the right). As a Patron, you get emailed any time I post something visible at your level of contribution (you can turn these emails off, if you like).

The cool part is, through the comments on Patreon and the chat room on Discord, I'm able to hear directly from the people that support me, and use that inspiration and guidance to create something we're all proud of!

What will my money pay for?

As expensive pursuits go, traveling and video production are pretty near the top. Your contributions will help pay for the many costs associated with what is, effectively, making a TV show across multiple foreign countries. Costs include:

  • Travel: flights, lodging, food
  • Logistics: guides, translators, transport
  • Production: camera operators, editors, music licensing
  • Support: web hosting, software, legal fees

Why Patreon?

Audience support isn't just a nice way to operate, it's the only way something like Cloth Map is possible. Frankly, it just wouldn't make financial sense for all but the largest media companies to support a project like this, especially with all the overhead that comes with being a big company. Thankfully, our audience cares about more than just Return On Investment.

After years of working at a website with a subscription model, I saw firsthand the great things that come from having a dialogue with a small group of passionate users. It's a model I believe in, not just from a business standpoint but as a fan myself. I truly believe this is the way the world is going, and I couldn't be more excited to be a part of it.

By the way, while you’re here, might I suggest checking out the fine folks in the "Supported By" section in the lower right corner of this page?

What’s the fastest animal on earth?

The cheetah.

The Cloth Map intro video was filmed by the estimable Jeremy Jayne. For more of his work, check out noclip. You can also find him (and his awesome music) on Twitter and SoundCloud.
