Welcome

My name is Seán McManus and I run Goodman Learning. I founded Goodman Learning with the goal to provide online learning services to public schools at cost or for free.

Our Mission Statement

Currently the vast majority of online learning service providers used by public schools operate as for profit companies, it is of note that this is a $107 billion business as of 2017. An extremely conservative estimate of the portion of this paid by US public school systems is $5 to 11 billion per year. The provision of these services to public schools for free (or in the long term at cost), would free up resources for public schools to pay for new buildings, resources and teachers instead of being stock piled by publically traded for profit companies.

What if, instead of paying the fees of many executives across a number of disparate companies, that capital was set aside to provide the services for free at no cost to public schools? Goodman Learning was setup with the explicit purpose to explore this potential.

About Seán

I have worked in public education in England, Japan and currently work for a large surburban high school in North Carolina. Prior to my current role I earned a PhD in Nutrigenetics at the University of East Anglia.

During my 10 years in an academic setting, I have noticed a number of trends that have inspired me to create Goodman Learning. I've detailed these trends below.

1. Decreasing funding of public schools in North Carolina and increasing class sizes.
2. Increasing utilization of online classes in schools.
3. Frequent changes to the providers of online classes in public schools.
4. Despite the exponential growth of free online educational resources, a noticeable lack of free educational content with the assessment capabilities required to demonstrate learning!
5. Increasing spend of tax payers money on online learning services to compensate for decreasing funds (Needless to say this is a dangerous proposition).

My goal with Goodman Learning is to address these trends, by providing free high quality classes to whoever would like to use them. The first step towards this goal is to release a Biology course online by the August 2018.

Our invitation

Building this platform is a full time job in and of itself and requires investment. I cannot do this by myself. Whether you see yourself as a user of the platform or as a supporter, we invite you to be a part of our mission. Your investment and contribution to Goodman Learning will contribute to providing free quality online learning resources to students and teachers that need them.

We invite you to be a part of freeing public schools and taxpayers from paying hand over first to for profit companies. If you would like to join us on this journey please see our patron rewards to the right.

Disclaimer:

I am employed as a teacher for Guilford County Schools. I use the website in my practice as a teacher and encourage other teachers to make use of the resources provided. All money donated through patreon is reinvested back into the provision of this platform to the public. Further to this, as I am already compensated by Guilford County and the State of North Carolina and the provision of this platform falls, to a certain extent, within the realms of my duties as a public servant I formally request that students and parents from Guilford County Schools do not contribute to the expenses of the platform via Patreon.

An expense report for the current year can be found here:
