Art lessons: Simple, short, pro-level

I am artist Daniil Belov. I create drawing and painting lessons which have already been viewed more than 500,000 times.

The ultimate goal is to create a full painting encyclopedia, with free access for everyone: from kids and adults who don't have a proper teacher locally, to professionals who want to learn advanced skills. Any place, any ability, any person.

Do you really know how to paint?

Before I tell more about the lessons, here are a couple of my pieces to prove that I at least know how to hold a brush. On my site www.daniil-belov.com you can find stories of these two paintings, materials for the lessons and more artwork.

My goal is to make the knowledge of the Russian Art School available for the world

Actually, this project started while I was working on my PhD work, which was research on traditions of art education in Russia. During that time, besides reading a lot of material, I taught students, both adults and kids; researched a collection of artwork by kids from various schools and how they were taught (the collection is gathered by the Institute of Art Education during the last century); and finally researched the connection between art education, psychology and the physiology of visual perception. Doing all that I was able to structure my knowledge into my own view on art education, which I now express in my videos. And, of course, I keep looking for better and easier ways to explain art.

I was lucky and received a great education. I studied for 7 years at an academic art school, where professional artists were teaching kids how to draw. They had built an education system based on the best Russian academic art school traditions. After ten years in my school, I continued my education at Stroganov Art Academy and later as a PhD student at the Institute of Art Education of the Russian Academy of Education.

Wherever I was studying, the situation was the same - enthusiasts are practically the only reason why art education still exists. But each year old masters are fading away. So the knowledge of Russian Art school educational methods is fading away.

I would like to keep this knowledge available to the world, because it’s the knowledge which allows others to learn how to speak the language of art, how to create poems with paints, how to be a conscious creator instead of a living photocopier. And I would like to add to it my own findings.

And I know that most people in the world will never have a good painting teacher - they are too rare, both for children and adults. And I know that written materials are often not good enough or not helpful without video.

That's why I’ve created my own series on painting and drawing. I would like to create a full course, covering most of the important themes so that professional art knowledge can be accessible for everyone, even for kids in a small town. It will never be as good as a real-life art teacher, but I know from the feedback to my videos how important having such lessons is.

Shooting a good lesson is a challenge

Sometimes to write a 5 minute video scenario I need to find a full day or more. I need to write content so that it is structured and brief. I need to think how to explain things better. Sometimes I even need to understand physics to be able to explain why something should be drawn one way or another. After that I argue with my friend, an artist, about how to present the material better, that also takes hours sometimes. After several hours of work the knowledge is easy to understand, interesting to listen to, and very concise to save my viewers’ time.

After that I search for locations and objects to shoot live examples. I look for paintings to use as examples. Sometimes I construct example objects myself, or buy them in a shop.

Only after that can I move to the shooting stage. It's also really hard sometimes – the resulting five minutes can take several hours of shooting from me and a cameraman. Postproduction also requires hours to make videos short and vivid.

Then I need to write subtitles to translate videos, check them with a native speaker and dub the episodes.

In a nutshell, you can image how much time all this takes.

I wish some parts of the work such as subtitles could be made by someone else, so I could just focus on writing and shooting new lessons.

For a dollar you get a new pro-video lesson

I wish to be able to shoot videos more and with better quality and be able to create the full course - that's why I am on Patreon. For you that means that not only can you benefit a good cause, but you also get professional art lessons with a small fee due to crowdfunding, which would cost a hundred bucks if you bought them as a paid course.

How it works

When you become a patron, each time I post a new paid video post here, I'll get the patron support fee from you.

I am not going to create more than 3 paid videos per month. This model allows me to shoot videos when I have time and my patrons don’t have to pay till the video is ready to air. This way I am sure that I have a budget and they are sure to receive new videos.

If you become a patron, you'll be able to set a maximum per month on your confirmation page. This way you can control the expenses without any difficulty.

Like the merchants of old Venezia, you can support world culture and art education. Doesn't that sound solid?

Not only do you get this honor, but you'll get your own landscape painting from me. The size of the landscape will be around 20x30 cm or 20x20, as I usually create small miniature paintings. I will choose the landscape scene.

Goals
$5 of $200 per Video lesson
I'll be able to shoot videos with a professional microphone. Clear voice - clear understanding.
