My name is Dave Brenn, and I am a balloon artist. I'm the guy who made that dog for your kid that one time. And predictably it broke soon after, your kid cried, I made a new one, and the cycle of life continued.

I've been creating balloon art live at events for almost 20 years. And in that time I've gotten lots of questions.
"Are those special balloons?"
"Does the squeaking noise get to you?"
"Do you know where the bathroom is?"

But the question that I get asked the most, by far, is "how did you learn this?"

I always replied to this with some version of my origin story, which is frankly not super interesting. Working for a party entertainment company was my part time job in high school...and I just kept doing it. I've done it all over the years, from stilt walking to face painting, I was even a clown for a few years. Balloon art is just what stuck with me the longest. It's what's taken me around the world.

But what's more interesting about this question isn't what it can reveal about me. But what it reveals about the person asking it. It hadn't occurred to me until recently to turn the question back on them.

So one day, after being asked that question "how did you learn to do that?" And after giving a brief reply, "blah blah blah stuff about me" I asked "why did you ask that question?"

I'll give you a second to think about what their response was...

They said "beacause I've always wanted to learn!"

Nearly every one replies with some version of the same answer. They have ALWAYS wanted to learn balloon art!

It struck me like lightning! For 20 years I've been missing a golden opportunity to make a genuine connection with another person...all I could think about was my own story. Here was someone who probably saw a balloon artist as a kid, lost or broke their balloon and wished they could make a new one on their own.

And now they've grown up and no one ever gave them the opportunity to learn balloon art. Or worse yet, they got a balloon kit from the store but couldn't figure it out. To be honest, most balloon kits come with low quality balloons and the instructions are less clear than those furniture assembly comic books.

I want to change that

I want to teach that person standing there, who just asked me a question they themselves may not have realized was a vulnerable request for knowledge, I want to teach them how to make a dog.

I want to make balloon art accessible and fun, and I have a plan. I want to travel the country, and the world, teaching balloon art to as many people as possible. If you love art and support art education, please help support my adventure to spread the joy of balloons!
