About Davu Seru
I am an improviser, composer, drummer, writer and educator living in Saint Paul, MN. My formative years were spent in Chicago paying dues as an apprentice to bandleaders affiliated with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). Also, a near-twenty-year (-and running) relationship with elder avant-garde improvising musician Milo Fine might illustrate the role that non-institutional ways of learning figure in to my sense of the black music ethos. That's despite my formal position as visiting faculty in the English Department at Hamline University.
Art speaks across genres and requires cultural competence and leadership from its artists. To that end I am a member of the Chicago-Twin Cities collaboration Black Praxis Sound Project with Eliel Sherman Storey and David Boykin, as well as the director of the No Territory Band Black Understudy Program which aims to encourage the performing and composing of creative improvised music by a younger generation of black musicians in the Twin Cities.
