DRAWING 10,000 BIRDS

Hi everyone, I'm Christina Baal! I'm the artist and birder behind  Drawing 10,000 Birds. I've been drawing wildlife ever since I could hold a crayon. When I was a kid, I took armloads of animal books out of the library so I could copy the pictures. But when I discovered the world of birding, I realized that I could be the person seeing the creatures I wanted to draw. And I realized that the art made from an encounter with a living bird was infused with the personalities and quirks of that individual creature, plus my own wonder and emotions, in a way that my drawings from references never could be.

Drawing 10,000 Birds is my personal mission to meet every single one of the 10,000-plus species of birds in the world and to record the experience of meeting each bird in art. It is an initiative that seeks to promote art as a means to better understand and interpret that natural environment across all age groups and parts of the world. Birds are creatures that defy both cultural and geographic barriers; they are beings that connect everyone in the world through a universal language of recognition.

Why Patreon?

So much of what I have achieved so far would not be possible without the inspiration of both birds and people. Therefore, is my goal to complete my quest not only for personal fulfillment, but to use art as a way to pay it forward by promoting three major goals:

Education: I think that it is so important to learn more about the world around us. When I am not running around chasing birds, I work as an environmental educator teaching kids and adults about nature and birds. By teaching people about birds through both art and science, it fosters a connection to the natural world. By becoming my patron, you are helping me extend my reach beyond the people I can help teach face-to-face by helping me invest time and energy into creating web and downloadable educational content.

Conservation: I think it is important to give back to the birds that give me so much. I donate as much as I can for now- five percent of my profits- to organizations that support environmental conservation and justice. The more are I paint, the more I can sell, and the more money I can funnel back into birds. Beyond this, I hope that my art and stories show an intimate side of birds that motivates people to fall in love with them as I have. I want to paint as many birds as well as I possibly can, capturing their beauty and personalities in art. After all, people want to protect what they love.

Inspiration: My dream is ridiculously ambitious. I have no idea whether or not I will see and paint 10,000 birds, but I do know that I will be chasing after this until the day I die. And what really matters are the things I'll see, the places I'll go, and the people I'll meet. I want to be someone who inspires people to go after their dreams, even if they seem impossible, just as I have been inspired by so many incredible individuals and, of course, the creatures we share this world with.

In order to fulfill these goals, I need to be able to spend more time on painting birds and on creating more educational content. I also love doing presentations and workshops at libraries, schools, and other venues with my volunteered time. Currently, I spend a lot of time doing odd jobs beside art and teaching to keep the ship afloat. I realized that if I spent this time painting and making cool downloads, the amount of content I churned out could be so much more!

With your help, I can devote myself more fully to Drawing 10,000 Birds, working as hard as I possibly can to create bird art and help people connect emotionally to the natural world through both art and birding. And hey, by following me on my adventure, you are helping me get one step closer to the day I finish painting that 10,000 bird!

I cannot thank you enough for your support! It means so much to me.
