Who am I?

Hi, my name is Mat Hopwood and I am an independent game developer of more than 20 years, I have been through the game industry mill time and time again and worked across countless platforms, developed countless games, engines and tools and made other people lots of money along the way. These days I work as a sub contractor developing mainly Unity and web games. I still make other people lots of money but I now get to do it from my own home office :).

As well as games I develop tools and cross platform engines to help make other developers lives easier. My biggest and most important projects are:

  • IGX SDK - Free open source cross portal game services and monetisation platform for web game developers
  • Booty5 - Free open source HTML5 game engine and editor
  • Drmop Blog - I have also been running an informative tutorial based game development blog for the last 9 years

What is my inspiration?

Indie game developers are a downtrodden bunch, we work incredibly long hours pouring our soul into everything we create for very little monetary reward. Gamers don't like to pay for games anymore and there are far too many places willing to give our creations away for very little in return (usually a percentage for adverts shown in the games). Deploying a web game to a new app store or web portal is a task and a half which takes many days and in some cases weeks. Code has to be re-designed, re-written and tweaked endlessly to keep up. This all gets in the way of our true single purpose of doing what we love, which is CREATING GAMES.

What am I trying to achieve?

I love to create things and if those things help others along the way then more the better and win win for everyone. My mission right now is to create a single centralised way for game developers to write their game once using a single API with access to great back-end gaming services and monetisation then deploy to every notable web portal on the net.

I have created the IGX SDK. Based on the Facebook Instant Games social platform, the IGX SDK has 4 primary purposes:

  • Provide a single API to all web game developers with great game, social and monetisation features. Write your game once and deploy to everywhere
  • Deploy games created that use the Facebook Instant Games API to the web and beyond with little to no code changes
  • Build instant game features into existing games before deploying to the Instant Games platform, saving valuable time and money
  • Bolster the existing Instant Games platform with new features such as real time user to user communication

At the time of writing the following service providers are supported

  • xtralife - Provides GameService, StorageService, UserService, LeaderboardsService, MessagingService, ReferralService
  • kongregate - Provides GameService, UserService, AnalyticsService, PaymentsService, ShareService, ChatService
  • crazygames - Provides AdsService
  • gamedistribution - Provides AdsService
  • adinplay - Provides AdsService
  • google - Provides AnalyticsService
  • paypal - Provides PaymentsService
  • generic - Provides ShareService

I plan to add the following service providers:

  • Game Analytics
  • Miniclip
  • Newgrounds
  • Poki
  • Y8
  • Armor Games
  • Spil Games
  • Kizi

Additional service providers will be added on demand.

A Unity 3D plugin will also be created granting Unity game developers access to the same features as HTML5 web game developers.

You can find out more about the project on  IGX SDK on Github

The IGX SDK will also be fully integrated into  Booty5 HTML5 game engine and game editor.

I believe that we can create something truly ground breaking with IGX that will have a positive affect not only on indie developers lives but also the wider gaming industry.

Why do I need money?

Its a well known fact that there are only 24 hours in a day and I need to sleep some of those (believe me if I didn't have to then I wouldn't :)). I spend much of my time creating products for other people. I regularly clock up over 90 hours of work time per week because I want to work on the things I love to work on alongside my normal client work, such as the IGX SDK and the Booty5 engine / editor being prime examples. With a regular income via Patreon I could cut back the number of hours I work for clients and put much more time into creating interesting and helpful tech such as the IGX SDK, which benefits everyone.
