Durban Patrons of Rock
Mission Statement

History:

Durban has had a long history of underground rock bands. The stories around these bands usually involve financial failure with the more successful acts leaving Durban in search of a more sustainable market. In recent years Durban has been left off of the touring circuits nationally with large promoters excluding Durban from it's international tours. Industry largely undervalues local acts with radio, festivals and the like opting to import acts rather than supporting and establishing an industry of Durban talent.

The current ‘scene’ consists of sporadic acoustic shows and open mic nights, with only a handful of recognised venues with regular original acts.

Foundation of the Durban Patrons of Rock

The foundation will be a collective who agree to contribute a monthly amount. This funding together with the collective individual skill sets will be used to launch a variety of projects focused on making local bands more visable. Patrons can be individuals/bands or organisations that want to recognised as part of developing this initiative.

Key goals and ambitions:
  • To recruit new patrons
  • To establish regular events to promote artists
  • To release regular compilation albums/playlists exposing the market to new music being released
  • To create, maintain and grow a database of fans of Durban Rock Music
  • To diversify and grow the demand for live rock music events
  • To establish means to educate and assist acts to grow their market
  • To fund initiatives that will result in the growth of interest in Durban Rock Bands
  • To build a financially sustainable environment that encourages growth of industry
  • To encourage the incorporation of local live rocks bands into other forms of entertainment
  • To publicly recognise the input of individuals and organisations that support this initiative
