Welcome! Many know me from my Instagram account, @swellvalleybloodpulse, where I write huge reviews of novels and academic books, and also as the author of the novel, "The Loud Earth." My reviews on my Instagram account have always been very popular and I hope now you'll be able to support them with a couple of dollars per month. From now on, all my reviews will be posted on my Patreon, including reviews of novels, feminist theory, queer theory, critical theory, and (U.S.) Southern studies. There will be 4-6 reviews per month.

I have had to suspend my PhD on representations of "mental illness" in U.S. Southern fiction by women (so far, Dorothy Allison and LeAnne Howe). Last year I suffered serious medical negligence and trauma from the psychiatric profession. I realised how dangerous psychiatric "medications" are and how many of us with severe "mental illness" are traumatised and retraumatised by the system. I was put on sixteen different drugs at various times last year and almost died. I haven't been offered any compensation or empathy.

I don't know if I will get back to my PhD but my main goal now is to critique the harmful field of psychiatry and to encourage healing beyond what the professionals offer us. The discipline of Mad studies is for those of us who no longer believe in the oppression of people with mental illness by so-called experts. The evidence about psych drugs, the biology of "mental illness," and various forms of "treatment" has been hidden from us and it is time to do our own research.

I already have an Instagram account, @intellectualisingillness, dedicated to this and I will start a separate blog for this work, as I want it to be as accessible as possible, but I really need your support. This work is intellectually rigorous and emotionally draining. I am a psychiatric survivor who still lives with chronic, complex mental illness. There is a small and growing Mad activist community but many people don't know about it and we need to create a base for this work to get out there.

Let's remove the authority from psychiatric institutions and "experts," and return it to those of us who suffer and function daily. Blending social media and academia is good for all of us.

My book reviews will be available on Patreon, as will extra content about Madness and psychiatry.
