About Emily Jo

Artist Statement

We are here on our Earth to make connections,
to express our individual perspectives.
We tell stories, listen to stories, listen to silence, and stop time with our attention,
our commitment to each moment.
I want to know you.
Our relationship is sacred; there is nothing more unique than each and every relationship and connection.
To know you, is to love you.
We learn, grow, and love by honoring the space between. This space holds all creation, abundance, and potential.
Starting now.

Contemporary Dance is an abstract art form, a style of abstract expressionism. That’s what the textbooks would tell you. However, I would like to propose that we look at abstraction differently. Our reality of grids and roads and computers and language is bathed in abstraction. I believe movement is our purest form of communication and expression; it is an escape from abstraction. By holding my emotions in my body and creating movement based on sensation, I strive to cultivate an environment where we listen to each other on a stripped down and basic level. Let’s celebrate our physicality, and our bodies’ ability to care for us and connect us to others.

Artist Bio

Emily Jo is a contemporary dancer and choreographer, originally from Loveland, Colorado, and residing and working in Brooklyn, New York City. After earning her BFA in Modern Dance Performance from the University of Oklahoma, she attended the José Limón Professional Studies Program in New York City. She has had the pleasure of performing internationally, in NYC and throughout New England with JKing Dance Company, Caitlin Cullen Dance Company, and as an independent and collaborative artist. Her work is based on bringing inward emotion outward through sensation and connection. She enjoys focusing on collaboration with multidisciplinary artists and musicians; recently creating and performing in Cantata Profana’s production of Lucretia, Idgy Dean and DMC, and ongoing collaborations with musician/songwriter, SEARCY. She is a founding member of The Borscht Collective, a group of dancers and artists collaborating in NYC.

So, What is Patreon?

Patreon is a website that connects creators and artists to the people who want to view their creations. It allows fans to support artists on a monthly basis, and get some extra perks as well! Patreon made this super cool video to explain the richness of connection between artists and their patrons:

As a Choreographer, why am I using this platform?

Creating dance, to me, is it’s own reward. There is nothing more fulfilling than to create something through movement in my own voice, and to share it with a receptive audience. My main goal is connection. I need it. You need it. Our world at this moment, needs it, and needs it badly. I could really use your help to make this happen.

To create more work

Dance requires space, and space rentals require money. I am so grateful to be a member of the Jonah Bokaer Arts Foundation and have access to affordable rehearsal space. The money that you pledge to me will go a long way towards the time I am able to spend in the studio, and towards the ideas that I will be able to flesh out.

To create more elaborate work

Set design, and the use of props in a work can add an entirely different dimension to the experience. Your dollars will go towards the exploration and usage of higher quality costumes, set pieces, and other theater elements.

To show my appreciation for those who help me realize my vision, by compensating them for their time, as often as I can.

Harsh reality: dancers do not get paid for their work very often. Every dancer I have ever met has been an incredibly dedicated worker, collaborates as well as they breathe, and brings creativity and artistry to everything they do. Many of us have spent our lifetime training in this craft, are experts in the field, and fluent in many other artistic and active languages. When my dear dancer friends help me by dancing and creating in my work, I so desire to pay them a rehearsal wage and performance pay. It is the least I can do for them, as they give themselves so generously to realize my artistic vision.

What do you get by becoming a Patron?

Updates on my process and work

When you pledge, you will gain access to my feed here on Patreon. You will see updates on my work, and get information about events and performances.

Discussion

Some pledge tiers will be able to engage with me through Discord, a platform which facilitates discussion between patron and creator. This will be enriching for all of us, as it will make a space to discuss themes I am working on in my dances, and finding common ground in ideas.

Tarot and Meditation

Much of my inspiration comes from observation of my inner and outer world. I get excited about patterns and symbols that occur in my life and the lives of those around me. One way that I connect more deeply to these patterns and symbols is through Tarot. I find that some of my juiciest ideas and stories are drawn from these ancient archetypes and symbols. Along with my practices in Zen Buddhism and meditation; I find that this is a strong dichotomy with an alchemical result of inspiration. I hope to share a bit of my journey with Tarot, meditation, astrology and Zen with you on my Patreon feed.
