What do you make?
Fansplaining is a podcast that comes out every other week. It covers topics related to fandom in all its forms. We’ve covered subjects like the monetization of fanfiction, racism in the Star Wars fandom and beyond, shipping as activism, the history of fangirling, and “toxic fandom.”

We’ve had great guests over the years, like Stephanie Burt (Harvard professor and fanfic writer), Britta Lundin (writer on the CW’s Riverdale and author of Ship It), Orlando Jones (actor on American Gods and SyFy’s face at SDCC), Emily Nussbaum (Pulitzer-Prize-winning TV critic), and Ebony Elizabeth Thomas (Penn professor and diversity in children's books advocate). So far, we’ve created more than 100 episodes and a bunch of special content.

We also publish new writing on fandom topics, fromMary Sues to the dictionary definition of “shipping” to fannish linguistics. And we frequently run surveys about fandom topics and analyze the results; our most recent survey had over 17,000 respondents!

Why Patreon?
Fansplaining is free, and we want it to always remain free—but we also want to be able to afford to keep making it. Every episode takes us hours to make on top of full-time jobs, and Patreon is the only way we’re compensated. We’re also committed to paying great authors to write for us and great artists to create for us (like our collaborations with the brilliant Maia Kobabe!). Finally, we have to pay for hosting, equipment, and other expenses. In short: we love making this podcast, but it’s also very costly. Patreon lets you chip in.

How does this work?
You sign up to support us for however much you want to—it’s like a Kickstarter, but you pay the same small amount every month. Depending on how much you give, you qualify for different rewards.

Who are you again?
Elizabeth Minkel is a journalist who’s written about fandom for the New Statesman, The Guardian, The Millions, The New Yorker, and other publications. Flourish Klink works for a company called Chaotic Good Studios. They both are longtime fangirls. They met on a panel about fans and fan culture at San Diego Comic-Con, and in that instant (er, actually at the party afterwards), Fansplaining was born.

TRAVEL TIME!
When we reach this level of support, we'll be able to travel to make the very best episodes possible. We'll be able to go to conventions that we aren't already planning to attend, and work with guests we would otherwise never be able to book.
