Food Communities facilitate and support the growing, foraging, preserving, storing, cooking, swapping and sharing of our own food in our own community all year round. There is a network of Food Community groups across Southern Scotland and they are completely free to join and participate. The food we champion, truly local food that is grown in harmony with nature, is potentially the freshest, tastiest, healthiest, most eco-friendly and economical. By working efficiently as a team and pooling our knowledge, time and resources we can be eating our own food all year round for next to nothing and helping protect our environment.
Food Community members share advice and tips on everything and anything related to producing and preparing food in Facebook groups specific to local areas. If you want to learn more about how to grow, forage, preserve or cook you only need to ask. The Facebook groups are perfect platforms to swap or share home-grown and foraged food with other members. This is ideal for using up surpluses and accessing things that you can’t find or grow.
We also have various community gardens where we grow organic fruit and vegetables, herbs and flowers. Using the combined knowledge, resources, skills and manpower of the group we create beautiful, organic, fertile, efficient food growing spaces and anyone is welcome to come and grow their own food with the support and equipment of the group. Any surplus food and flowers is sold. Food Communities Ltd is a social enterprise limited by guarantee. We have a clear business plan to generate revenue, but there are no shareholders and all profits are reinvested back into the organisation and the communities we serve.
