Hi! I'm a journalist fascinated by the way we connect with each other. I recently wrote a book about empathy and technology; one chapter of my book is about how those things operate in the world of journalism. In the context of fellow journalists increasingly being seen as an "enemy of the people," and some of my own friends and family members expressing their distrust of the media, I decided to explore journalists' relationships to their audiences in a new project.

On Frenemy of the People I interview journalists about their work, and then we get down to the tough stuff - why do they do what they do? Who is it really for? What responsibility do they feel toward their audiences? How do they handle feedback? What kind of mistakes have they made, and how do they learn to do better?

My hope is that FotP will do one (or, if I'm lucky, all) of these things:

1. Encourage journalists to be more transparent about how and why they do the work they do
2. Encourage more curiosity and discussion among audiences about how journalism is made
3. Entertain and educate you (and me!)

I'm doing this by myself, in my free time, so some of your contributions will go toward my time, writing, interviewing, and editing, as well as podcasting equipment. Each month, I will also donate to a media-related nonprofit chosen by a guest. Nonprofits may include organizations such as the National Association for Media Literacy Education, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Pro Publica, etc.
