About Gina Loring

Yaaay ekphrastic art!! (That's a fancy word for art that is inspired by other art). I recently completed my first full length poetry manuscript (currently being shopped for publication) and now I am adding a musical component: songs that are in conversation with the poems. So like a soundtrack to the book. Dope idea? I think so...but it's not about me. It's about YOU. Art takes a village, and your support will help bring this project OUT of my head and heart and INTO the world.

Below is the official synopsis of my poetry collection "Sucker Punch", which will inspire the songs I'll be writing and recording with YOUR help. Imagine you are holding a book in your hands and the following words are written on the back. That's the idea. It is a memoir in poems -- my experience with family, love, loss -- and finding the light at the end of some long ass tunnels.

Sucker Punch
poems by gina loring

With the exception of three meetings at the age of five, Gina saw her father only as the world did: through the television screen. The star of the cult classic film “Blacula” and a highly revered theatre actor, William Marshall played many roles, but never that of a father. When Gina reconnected with him at the age of twenty, she couldn’t have imagined what a life changing chapter she was stepping into. He was in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s and together they shared a profound journey of forgiveness and love before he succumbed to the illness.

Simultaneously, Gina met her brother Malcolm, and the two became very close. Within five years, both her father and her brother were dead, leaving Gina to make sense of the unthinkable, survive impossible grief, and eventually come into a place of healing.

Acclaimed performance poet and vocalist Gina Loring captures this fascinating narrative through honest, raw and vulnerable poetry. Her memoir in poems is an authentic and brave offering. At its core, it is a love story of a daughter and her father and a sister and her brother. Gina stands in her power by giving voice to the little girl she was, the young woman she became who embarked upon such a journey, and the grown woman she is now, with perspective enough to share the story.
