What does 'hist' mean?

1. Who is Hist and what does she do?

I'm an ESL teacher by day (that's English as a Second Language ... not the eSports league) and a meatshield in World of Warcraft by night. With my background in education, I decided to marry two of my passions and start creating edutainment videos on YouTube.

My ultimate goal is to create a supportive and encouraging environment in which new tanks feel confident enough to venture forth and get smashed in the face repeatedly. It's often a thankless job, but someone's gotta do it!

2. What do you get as a Patron?

All Patrons
  • get access to all of the Patron-only posts that I whack on here, including teasers for upcoming videos and access to podcasts (that I typically do while working on a video and which detail some of the things I'm trying to achieve and the challenges I'm working through);
  • get access to my Discord server, which you're free to use to chat with others or myself when I'm around;
  • get early access to my videos before everyone else on YouTube;
  • are credited at the end of each YouTube video.

Higher tier Patrons
  • get access to exclusive Discord channels where they can help shape the videos I make, nominate what videos they want to see scheduled next, and even give me a line to say at the end of a video (Don't worry, loves. Cavalry's 'ere!);
  • get access to all the extra random things I decide to give you generous folks. Whatever could it be (*cough*audio book?*cough*)?!

3. Why make a Patreon page?

There's a lot of things I'd like to do with content creation that I just don't have the time for, given my teaching load. At the moment, I use my free time to create videos, while simultaneously improving my rudimentary knowledge of video editing techniques. It's definitely a labour of love, but I do what I can with the resources at my disposal.

Funds raised by this Patreon will initially go towards the software and hardware upgrades I routinely make to improve the recording, editing and rendering processes. Additionally, it enables me to purchase music licences and, eventually, online courses to further my skills and improve the content I create.

Ultimately, I'd love to do this full-time and actually branch out into other areas: accessible gaming education; female and Australian representation; and inclusive gaming for all. However, I'm not quite in that sort of financial position just yet.

4. What does 'hist' mean?

The word 'hist' is an archaic exclamation that was popular in the 18th century. From what I can gather, it was pronounced 'sst' and was used to direct attention to something while also calling for silence.

Personally, I learnt of the word from a poem by C.J. Dennis, who was an Australian poet from the early 20th century. The first stanza goes:

Hist! . . . . . . Hark!
The night is very dark,
And we've to go a mile or so
Across the Possum Park.

There was a children's book version, which had these wonderfully eerie illustrations, and I remember sitting cross-legged with my classmates in rapt attention as our teacher spun a dark, foreboding tale. I didn't see the book again until I myself became a teacher and found it lurking in a dusty corner of my school's library.
