Who am I?

To be honest, sometimes I'm not even sure.
I'm a writer. I've published thirty novels in seven years, and joined even more collections and anthologies. I'm a cat mom. Somewhere around 40 of them, I think. I lost count a long time ago. That's what happens when you install a revolving door of rescue cats to give them a chance at life. I'm a medicated mess - I've been battling severe anxiety and depression for many, many years. Some days are wonderful. Some days are dark. I love life, I love my friends, and I love my readers - add my cats to the equation, and you've got the recipe for what keeps me going.

For years, people have been trying to convince me to set up a Patreon page. Even my dad spent some time trying to convince me it was a good idea. I never felt like I could come up with extra content that was worth anybody's money or support. How screwed up is that? If I didn't believe my content was worth anything, why was I publishing books to begin with?

We live in a society where people are taught from a young age that content creators are just doing their "hobby" for the passion of it. And we are - don't misunderstand me. I need to write the way I need to breathe. When days pass without putting fingers to keyboard, it manifests as a serious decline in my mental health.

But there's a lie in that assumption, too. Just because we LOVE to create our art doesn't mean we shouldn't be paid for it. Nurses don't go to nursing school for the money or because they want to get rich. They become nurses because they want to help people. Making a paycheck off it is a plus! Many people, when given the choice, choose a career that speaks to them on a level beyond "this is just a paycheck." Because what is the point of living if you can't enjoy what you do?

The same goes for writers. We enjoy what we do, and we should be paid for it. But we're up against astronomical obstacles many other working people aren't - ebook piracy, public trolling, being asked for free copies of our books constantly, being told our $2.99 books are too expensive, not to mention we are more likely to be seen if we just give away our work and hope for the best.

Why should you sponsor me?

I've been notoriously slow at finishing books. It seems some readers think I just don't care, that I'm just stringing them along for no reason. That's pretty far from the truth. Let me see if I can sum up what's happened in the last four years to keep me from accomplishing all I've wanted to accomplish.

My stepdad committed suicide. I withdrew for an entire year into a darkness I couldn't crawl out of, and I didn't write a damn word because I had nothing in me to give. I went to work full time. I binged a lot of Netflix. I gave up.

Thanks to some serendipity, I slid tentatively into the Facebook writing world again. Slowly, over the course of two years, I dipped my toes back into writing. It was easier to apply for projects that would spark my creativity, so I did - shared world collections, boxed sets, short story anthologies. Things that could rev my engine from the outside, and thus heal me on the inside. Late 2016 through today, those projects have been releasing and have helped renew my desire to write.

I've been busy. Like, painfully busy between those projects and working a full time day job. And it's time to change that - with your help.

So why now?

In recent months, I've been laying a foundation not many people know about. I've slowly picked up some freelance positions to supplement my income. I've signed on to a few MAJOR projects that will do a great job supporting me as I move into the summer months. And now, my husband and I are about to make an offer on a house that is MUCH cheaper than the expensive money-pit we currently live in and can't afford.

The combination of a new, cheaper home and my current freelance income are going to allow me to leave my day job and write full time.

Exciting, right? It is. SO MUCH. It's my dream come true. But let's be honest - living on a freelance/writing income is scary. Money coming in isn't guaranteed. I may make enough one month to pay the bills, and then see tumbleweeds the next. Balancing the income and being sure to save for slim times are definitely on the menu, but diversifying where I make money is too, so that those slim months might not be quite so slim.

And the house is going to be a HUGE change, too. It's an hour-and-a-half north of where we currently live. We're planning on getting rid of all of our broken-and-bent, hand-me-down furniture, taking our clothes, books, and pets, and starting completely over. This is something we've desperately needed for a long, long time. The house will need a little work, and we'll need to replace our old broken things. And the demon-- I mean cats will need feeding. My husband will be keeping his full time job - I won't.

That's where you come in. If you're here, you're here because you're already a fan of my work. And holy crap, it never gets old to realize people love my books! Thank you SO MUCH for being a part of this incredible journey with me. And thank you for sticking by me when I couldn't pick myself up off the ground to finish the books you really want to read.

Now, I'm ready. Let's do this.
