About Emma Renault

It's nice to meet you! I'm Emma. I'm a novelist living in the Southern US.
I write Literary Fiction - Pastoral Slice-of-Life, in the Magic Realist style, to be specific.
I draw a lot of inspiration from josei manga. I write stories about adult women loving each other and living their everyday lives, filtered through the lens of the fantastical and unreal as metaphor. Emotional realism is a major focus of my work. My writing also often centers on mental illness, homophobia, complicated views of sexuality, and trans characters.
My novel, The Wind-Up Doll, is coming out on November 19th! You can buy it wherever books are sold! It's about a clockwork doll and a chronically ill gardener working through trauma and learning to cope with mental illness in the idyllic countryside. It's got cute gay girls, a town where Halloween is never far away, and critique of society's damaging messages about LGBT women!
Currently, I'm working on another novel! It's called Kaliko On The Shoals, and it's about a depressed college dropout turned beach bum tangled in a complicated web of anxieties, relationships, and traumas, learning to navigate the adult world and her relationship with her long-term girlfriend. It's fundamentally a story about recovery from sexual trauma, and about the damage capitalism does to mentally ill people. It's got a really cute and lived-in relationship, a secluded island, old school video game references, and a darkened theatre where everything goes wrong.
If that sounds like something you'd like to support, please do! I appreciate each and every one of you. :)
