Ijumaa’s work focuses on reflective practice, culturally relevant teaching, and developing anti-bias curriculum for young children and adults. As a member of Harvest Resources Associates, much of her work with teachers and administrators happens by facilitating professional development in a “community of practice” model that promotes reflective teaching practices and leadership.
Ijumaa has more than twenty years of teaching in early education and directing. She brings her skills and experiences as a teacher, leader and mentor, and a strong belief in the value of a play-based and emergent curriculum to her keynote presentations and workshops. Also serving as an Adjunct Instructor, Ijumaa works with and mentors students in the areas of play across the life span, cross-cultural communication, language development, working with multi/dual language learners, partnering with parents, and children’s literacy.
Ijumaa received a Basic Core Certificate in Early Childhood Education from UCLA Extension followed by a BA in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College with a concentration in Early Childhood Education, Emergent Curriculum, and Anti-bias Education. She also received her MA in Human Development from Pacific Oaks with a concentration in Leadership in Education and Human Services with sub-specializations in College Teaching/Teaching Adults.
Megan began her career working as an assistant in a Waldorf elementary school, and after completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan, went on to become a lead teacher in a Head Start preschool classroom. Now, as a doctoral candidate, she works part-time as a trainer affiliated with The Human Root, the Center for Racial Justice in Education and the New York Early Childhood Professional Development Institute, facilitating workshops on racial equity and social justice.
Megan was recently elected to the governing board of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) after several years serving as a co-facilitator of the association's Diversity & Equity Interest Forum. She holds a master’s degree in early childhood education from Dominican University and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in social policy at Brandeis University. Her dissertation is a participatory action research project that explores the impact of “colorblind” policymaking on the lives and careers of veteran early childhood educators of color.
Megan lives in Harlem with her partner and fellow early childhood education/ed policy nerd, Ruben Brosbe. Together, they love reading, eating, and organizing with the Jewish Multiracial Network, Bend the Arc, and Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (or JFREJ).
