But first, let me tell you why we need your help.
I'm Jan-Willem Dikkers. I launched ISSUE in NY in 1999 after having worked for several years as a creative director, both in-house and freelance, for several top fashion brands and magazines.
In the mid-90s, the fashion industry offered a lot of creative and artistic opportunities and funded many niche projects. ISSUE had a good run during this time, benefitting from the support of many of the top fashion brands like Chanel, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Prada, Helmut Lang, Jill Sander and Calvin Klein.

But, soon the priorities of the industry changed. In the mid-2000s many niche publications evolved into luxury objects and shifted editorially to adapt. My interest remained on creating an artistic, non-commercial indie publication—and that meant I eventually needed put ISSUE on hiatus.
After an eight-year break, I relaunched ISSUE from Los Angeles in 2014. My focus is to offer an optimal experience online, and to offer print versions the way the music industry offers vinyl.
Today, ISSUE’s print edition is printed on demand and available at specialty bookstores and museums in Los Angeles and New York as well as online globally via Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

This approach has allowed me to run everything at a much lower cost and maintain a fiercely independent editorial focus that champion exceptional emerging talent in art, music and film. Over the past four years, we've produced an impressive amount of exceptional editorial content—including sixteen print issues.

Although our readership base exceeds 400k, in this new era of massive social media numbers and online traffic our niche numbers do not present us with a monetization model. Our primary focus is, and always has been, creating great content—not using our resources to create social media hype.

ISSUE has been largely been functioning without revenue, with very occasional advertising support. The print copies that are sold online or at stores only just cover the cost of making them physically available. I have been able to leverage my income from client work to maintain ISSUE for the last few years, but this model is no longer viable.

Just like public radio does, we’re asking for your support to keep ISSUE going. Please give what you can to support the content you enjoy— and keep independent publishing alive.
