About Rachel Devenish Ford

I'm Rae, the Journey Mama, mother of five, author, artist, and wanderer.

I've been writing at Journey Mama since 2005, telling stories of motherhood and travel, my journey with anxiety, my faith in Christ, things that drive me crazy and things that make me want to sing. I write books and poems and fantastical things. I write hope, humor and beauty as well as deep sad things that need to be spoken. I write about diverse, under-served characters who live truth, and I like to draw on my faith in my writing. I also draw and paint, creating works that tease the imagination. I write as Rachel Devenish Ford and Rae Walsh.

I've published eleven books, traveled to many places and had three more children (bringing the grand total to five) since I started writing. Thousands of people have read my honest writing and many have written to tell me that it has changed their lives. I've met beautiful people who read the blog or my books and have even stayed with them in their homes (thank you!) during my travels.

Over the years, writing and art have become some of the main ways we support our family. We are volunteers in our non-profit organization, and we are often scrambling to pay bills. There are always dentist visits and education costs. It's exhausting.

I would love to make a living from what I create: from my writing and art, from the deep thought and hours of work that goes into it.

I've retained a lot of freedom in what I choose to write about by self-publishing. (My writing is often too spiritual for secular publishers and not spiritual enough for Christian publishers, but I like that in-between place that is welcoming to all and doesn't only speak to people in one strata of society.) But this means that making a living from what I do is tricky.

I'm asking for the old-fashioned idea of patronage, at the level of a dollar to a few dollars a month per person.

What this means is that I get to write and write, to put these thoughts and work and ideas into the world without worrying about how marketable they are, or how I need to shift to suit the current trends.

I'm asking for patrons, people who love my writing and art, to support my creative work so I can continue putting stories, drawings, and posts into the world for years to come.

When you choose to support me, you can select an amount per month and then get the rewards as they happen!

What's happening in the near future?

A new, 2019/2020 project that I have started is a monthly patron-only newsletter that documents my research and progress on a non-fiction book I am in the process of writing. It's called Searching For Home, and it's about all the complex layers of what home means, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

If you want to be a part of this project, all you have to do is become a patron, at any tier. You'll automatically be added to my list and get the newsletters in your inbox.

I am also working on a list of books:

  • World Whisperer Book 5 and 6
  • Aveline Book 3 and 4
  • Searching For Home, a non-fiction book about home.
  • Audiobooks!
  • And the long-awaited sequel to A Traveler's Guide to Belonging.

I wouldn't be on this journey without my readers and fans, so thank you with all my heart for your support, and your time spent reading and caring about my stories and characters.

Goals
27 of 100 patrons
Have you ever heard the phrase 1000 true fans? It's an idea that Kevin Kelly came up with about how many true fans of your work you need to make a living with your creative work.
I want to get there eventually, but first, let's start with a tenth of that. I'm aiming for 100 patrons.
I think we can do it.
If I reach this amount, I will make a celebration video!
